(Madison County, NY – March 2015) Earth Day is Wednesday April 22. The Madison County Landfill will host a county-wide textile recycling event to celebrate. Textiles will be collected at 10 sites throughout the county making it easy for residents to recycle their textiles.
Any textile item, even if it’s worn, torn or stained can be recycled as long as it is clean or dry.
“There is a misconception that textiles must be in wearable condition to be donated,” said Mary Bartlett, Recycling Coordinator at the Madison County Landfill. “Actually, textiles can be recycled even if they are not in condition for resale.” However, rugs, carpeting and bed pillows will not be accepted.
Textiles will be collected at the following sites and times on Wednesday April 22:
Brookfield: 1 to 3 p.m. Brookfield Historical Society, 10556 Main Street
Canastota: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Madison County Office for the Aging, 138 Dominic Bruno Blvd.
Cazenovia: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Harris Cleaners, 21 Nelson Street
Chittenango: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum, 717 Lakeport Rd.
Hamilton: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hamilton Library Community Room, 13 Broad Street
Morrisville: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cornell Cooperative Extension Ag Center, 100 Eaton Street
Nelson: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nelson Farms, 3261 Rt. 20 East
New Woodstock: 1 to 5 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. New Woodstock Library, 2160 Main Street
Oneida: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. LoJo Technology, 327 Farrier Ave.
Peterboro: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Gerrit Smith Visitor Center, 5304 Oxbow Rd.
Wampsville: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Madison County Highway Department, Court Street
Any type of clothing is acceptable—as well as blankets, sheets, towels, and curtains, gloves, socks, paired shoes and winter boots. Clothing must be clean, dry and packed in strong plastic bags, such as garbage or lawn-leaf bags. Please do not bring clothes on hangers.
Textiles collected will be donated to the Rescue Mission who will sort the donations and sell usable items in its Thrifty Shopper stores. Textiles that cannot be sold are baled and sold on the textile recycling market.
Textiles are one of the least recycled items. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the average person throws away 70 pounds of clothing per year.
“We want to celebrate Earth Day this year by collecting all types of textiles which will keep them out of the landfill”, said James Zecca, Madison County Landfill Director.

Great idea. “Textiles that cannot be sold are baled and sold on the textile recycling market.” Some of these items can be shredded and remade into home insulation and upholstery stuffing. Some are sent to developing nations. Either way, it’s important to keep textiles out of landfills and we applaud your efforts!
Such events should be held more in future to encourage people to donate clothes which can be later used for various purposes. – “70 pounds of clothing per year.” a big amount! Save Earth, Save environment!
