As we approach this joyous holiday season to worship and share with our families and loved ones, it’s important to remember that holidays are happiest when we celebrate safely.

Please consider some of the following tips to protect our homes and our loved ones during this special time and for the rest of the year, as well:

l. Christmas Tree Safety

a. According to the National Fire Protection Association more than one third of home Christmas Tree fires started in a living room, family room or den resulting in all the fire fatalities attributed to Christmas Tree Fires.

b. Live Christmas Trees even when maintained with enough water have a limited viability and should be removed as soon as there are indications they are drying out.

c. Make sure electrical decorations are within the capacity of the household outlets andĀ provided with circuit protection.

d. Keep trees and other flammable decorations away from heating devices, candles and fireplaces.

ll. tighting Our Home for Joy.

a. Make sure that all decorative lighting is UL listed and designed for the intended use.

b. Minimize the need for extension cords and if necessary make sure chords are rated for the energy draw.

c. The top three days for Candle Fires are Christmas, New Year’s Day, and New Year’s Eve.

d. Keep candles away from flammable materials such as curtains, upholstery, and table clothes.

e. Never leave lit candles unattended.

f. Electrical distribution and lighting equipment was involved in 40% of home Christmas tree fires.

lll. Remember, “Have a plan for everyone, including guests.”

a. Holiday guests need to be familiar with the sound of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

b. Make sure overnight guests understand your home escape plan.
