August events planned at the Canastota Public Library

The Summer Reading Program at the library winds down in August, but there are still lots of events to attend. From Storytime and Lapsit to family fun events, the library is hosting an art exhibit and our regular events are still happening through the summer.

Every month, the Canastota Public Library hosts an artist or artists in our Lawson Community Room. These art displays are always inspiring. For the month of August, the Community Fine Arts Guild is excited to be showing at the library. They are a passionate group of artists who are teachers of art or are retired teachers of art, music or science, from local school districts. They have members who have become successful self-taught artists without formal art education.

Many members are award-winning artists as well as part of the prestigious CNY Watercolor Society. The Community Fine Arts Guild cares about their communities and enjoy sharing their techniques and ideas with each other. Creating art is definitely a wonderful form of therapy for many of the members. We hope that you can stop by to enjoy the small sampling of the groups work. An artist’s reception will be held for the group Wednesday, Aug. 8, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Lawson Community Room. The community is welcome to attend to meet the artists.

On Aug. 1 at 6:30 p.m., join us for a talk on bacteria resistance by Dr. Arthur Totten, Ph.D. Antibiotic resistance rates in bacteria have been increasing dangerously in the last few decades. Totten has spent the last six years of his scientific career studying slow-growing, quickly-mutating bacteria known as mycoplasmas and how new antimicrobial compounds might be used to combat increasingly drug-resistant infections.

Come listen to a talk on some of his work, and how we all might be involved in decreasing rates of antibiotic resistance to benefit everyone in society. Totten is a 2007 graduate of Canastota Central Schools and holds a Ph.D. from The University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Friday, Aug. 3, students are encouraged to turn in their Summer Reading records for a book and a prize. Mrs. Liz wants to see who read the most and what you read this summer. Our final Baby & Me Lapsit session for the summer will be Wednesday, Aug. 1, and the final summer Storytime will be held Thursday, Aug. 2. Both sessions begin at 10 a.m.

Movies for August will be offered each Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. and again at 5 p.m. The following movies are scheduled to be shown:

  • Aug. 7: 15:17 to Paris, rated PG-13
  • Aug. 14: A Quiet Place, rated PG-13
  • Aug  21: I Can Only Imagine, rated G
  • Aug. 28: Red Sparrow, rated R

On the third Tuesday of every month, we hold a TED TALK and Discussion. On Aug. 21, Sir Ken Robinson’s topic is “Do Schools Kill Creativity?” You are invited to bring your own lunch. Coffee and cookies will be provided, compliments of the library. Discussion follows the video.

If there are programs you would like to see the library offer in the future, stop by or call and let us know.

The Canastota Public Library is located at 102 W. Center St., Canastota.
