Chainsaw safety workshop planned

Cornell Cooperative Extension Herkimer County is offering a “Chainsaw Safety” workshop Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 6:30 p.m., at the CCE office at 5657 State Route 5 in East Herkimer.

Mike Burns from Professional Forestry Services will present an instructional program for the occasional chainsaw user of safe operation and risk mitigation. This session is intended to be an introduction to chainsaw use and is not adequate preparation for felling standing trees (nor is it intended for any certification).

Participants will not be using a chainsaw as part of the workshop. Mike’s workshop will include proper safety gear, ways to start and operate a saw, and maintenance including sharpening of a saw.

Although free to attend, registration by Friday, Oct. 12, is required. To register, call the CCE office at 315.866.7920 or email herkimer@cornell.edu. Space is limited to 20 participants, so be sure to register early.

Funding for this program was provided by the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health with funds from the state Department of Health.
