(Oneida, Hamilton, NY – Sept. 2014) Music teachers from the Oneida City School District recently collected music instruments, instructional materials and supplies to be donated to the St. Kitts and Nevis Music Project.

“This is a wonderful project, and we’re glad to be able to help,” said Margie Hawthorne, Director of Music and President of the Madison County Music Educators’ Association.

The St. Kitts and Nevis Music Project aims to develop a comprehensive music program for at risk youth in the Caribbean nation.  With a population of 41,000– about half the size of Madison County– St. Kitts and Nevis struggles with one of the highest murder rates per capita in the world, the result of youth gang violence and drug related issues. The St. Kitts and Nevis Music Project, initiated in coordination with the St. Kitts Ministry of Culture and the island based non-profit organization Operation Future, helps to provide a critical, creative alternative for young people.

“We are extremely grateful to the Oneida City School District teachers for this thoughtful gift,” said project coordinator Chuck Fox.  “These instruments and supplies will have a big impact.”
