October begins at the Canastota Public Library with a wonderful art display by Sandra Z. DeVisser. DeVisser has been a teacher at Munson Williams Proctor Institute School of Art for over twenty years.

DeVisser has lived in Central New York all of her life and graduated from SUNY Albany and Colgate University. She has studied art at Munson Williams Proctor and more recently she studied and taught at el Instituto Allende in Mexico.

DeVisser’s work is a mini-retrospective, spanning two decades of her art. An artist’s reception has been scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7pm at the library.

Our Storytime and Baby & Me Lapsit programs begin again for ten weeks in October. Baby & Me Lapsit with Miss Angela is for babies up to age 24 months and their caregivers. Miss Angela introduces your child to the wonderful world of books during this Wednesday morning program. Baby & Me runs from Oct. 12 through Dec. 21 from 10am until 11am. Storytime with Mrs Liz will begin again Thursday Oct. 13 at 10am. Preschoolers enjoy read-aloud stories, games, crafts and a snack during this hour-long class. The program will run until Thursday, Dec. 22.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 3, the Page Turners Book Club for kids in grades 6 and up will meet at 6pm. Their first book is “Flora & Ulysses” by Kate DiCamillo. On Monday, Nov. 11 at 6pm, they will talk about “Stargirl” by Jerry Spinelli. Interested? Stop by and pick up the book to read prior to the meeting. Meetings last about an hour.

Talkin’ Baseball with Vince Doty will be held on Monday, Oct. 3 at 7pm. Doty will talk about “The Old Professor” including his witting sayings, his knowledge about baseball and his career as a player and coach. Doty will also talk about Canastota High School Baseball from the 60’s and 70’s. A brief question and answer period will follow this 45 minute presentation.

The American Girl Book Club will be starting up again on Thursday, Oct. 6 from 5 – 6:00pm. It’s a book club for girls ages 8 – 12 and space is limited. The girls meet monthly and read some of the American Girl books and then complete fun activities related to the book. Please contact the library for more information.

Do you know a girl between the ages of 11 and 16 who is interested in exploring careers in engineering, math or science? GEMS (Girls interested in Engineering, Math and Science) will meet the first Friday of each month beginning Oct. 7 at 3:30 p.m. Our first meeting will feature students from Morrisville State College’s ‘Women in Technology” group. If you are someone you know is interested, call us and let us know you’ll be attending.

The library will be closed Monday, Oct. 10 in honor of Columbus Day. We hope the closure will not be an inconvenience.

If you enjoy playing Scrabble and meeting new people, you will want to be a part of the new Scrabble Game Day at the library. An organizational meeting will be held on Monday, Oct. 17 at 10am for those interested in fun play, easy conversation and good coffee with their Scrabble.

On Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 7pm, John Kalil will offer a session workshop entitled, “Basic Estate and Asset Planning.” In this workshop, you will learn about protecting your assets, wills, trusts and probates. Robert K. Hilton, III Esquire will be a featured speaker. Call the library to reserve your space.

Our first Canalside Talk of the 2016-2017 season will be held Thursday, Oct. 27 at 7pm when Dr. Norman Dann speaks about his new book, “Ballots, Bloomers and Marmalade: the Life of Elizabeth Smith Miller.” Miller was a modern woman in an era when being modern and feminine were cause for criticism. Miller was interested in traditional elements of the 19th century and also took a deep interest in the woman’s rights movement. She worked diligently on the issues of suffrage and dress reform. The library will also display Elizabeth Smith Miller’s personal copy of “The History of Woman Suffrage: produced by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Matilda Joslyn Gage and Ida Husted Harper. The talk will last about an hour. The library will end the month with the annual Friends of the Library Book Sale. The sale will be held Oct. 27, 28 and 29. The money raised through the sale will benefit the library’s collections, programs and enhance the building and services that the library offers to the community. The sale hours are Thursday, Oct. 27: 9am -8:30pm; Friday, Oct. 28 from 9am – 5pm and Saturday, Oct. 29 from 10am -4pm.

Finally, you will want to try to catch a Tuesday movie at the library during October. Each Tuesday, at 5pm, the library will show a DVD for adults in the Lawson Community Room. This month, the following movies will be shown:

  • Oct. 4: The Martian, rated PG-13
  • Oct. 11: The Intern, rated PG-13
  • Oct. 18: Steve Jobs, rated R
  • Oct. 25: A Walk in the Woods, rated R
