On Wednesday, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association hosted the fall session of the Workplace Health Solutions Mini Conference to teach local companies about how to help their employees stay healthy and help their own bottom line.

Adults are spending more time at work than ever before. The workplace is a major part of American lives, but there has been an 83% increase in sedentary work in the U.S. since 1950. Since 80% of heart disease and stroke are preventable with healthy lifestyle habits, employers can make a difference in their employees’ health.

Dozens of people representing local companies gathered at the Resource Center for Independent Living for the conference. The free event featured a heart-healthy breakfast, networking opportunities, expert speakers, and a panel discussion. Breakout sessions focused on topics including employee recognition, celebrating food, and music therapy.

The morning’s keynote speaker was Dr. Anne Cahill, cardiothoracic surgeon with Mohawk Valley Health System. During the conference, the AHA/ASA announced a new worksite wellness webinar program.

Starting in January, the AHA/ASA will offer five lunchtime webinars focused on topics including lifestyle management, nutrition, stress management, mental health in the workplace, and stroke signs and symptoms. Webinars will be offered once per month.

For more information on the webinar program or other worksite wellness initiatives, contact the AHA/ASA at (315) 580-3964 or email heartofutica@heart.org.

The Workplace Health Solutions Mini Conference is sponsored by Columbia Place Associates, LLC, and the New York Beef Council.
