High school coach arrested for endangering the welfare of a child

On April 8, 2017, State Police in Watertown arrested Lloyd Kevin Smith, 46, of Theresa, on one count of endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.

On April 7, 2017, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Smith, who is the Indian River Central School District’s varsity baseball coach, was performing mixed martial arts-style maneuvers on a 16-year-old male student at the Indian River High School located in the town of Philadelphia.

One of the demonstrations was a choke-hold type of maneuver which caused the 16-year-old to become unconscious. The 16-year-oldthen fell to the ground and struck his head on a glass and metal door.

Smith was issued an appearance ticket returnable in Philadelphia Town Court April 12, 2017, at 7 p.m.
