Book Discussion of “The Invention of Wings”

Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

The OPL celebrates the centennial of women’s suffrage in N.Y.S. with a community read of Sue Monk Kidd’s bestselling novel about Sarah Grimke, real-life abolitionist and women’s rights advocate. Dr. Roxanna Pisiak, humanities professor at Morrisville State College, will guide the discussion. A limited number of copies of “The Invention of Wings” is available at the OPL for those who register.

Family Super Saturday

Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

Oneida Library joins the Oneida City School District in the One District One Book program that involves elementary-school students and their adult family members in reading a selected book. They can join the fun at the OPL for activities, games and crafts based on the themes of the district’s choice of book (to be announced Oct. 11).

Votes for Women: Reading and Discussion

Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

Adult readers interested in Upstate New York’s colorful history of women’s rights reform are invited to participate in a Humanities New York reading and discussion program Votes for Women, starting with an introduction Oct. 19 and meeting in four weekly sessions thereafter on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m.Oct. 19-Nov. 16. Led by Dr. Tom Murray, discussions will focus on three history texts and one novel. Copies of the books are provided by Humanities NY. The program is limited to 15 people. Those interested can register at the OPL desk.

The OPL Players Present ‘The Game of Life’

Friday at 7:00 p.m.

At Madison Hall on State Rt. 20 in Morrisville, the OPL Players will present a readers theater production of “The Game of Life: The Great Peterboro Baseball Story,” directed by Virginia Drake with Ken Drake and written by Tom Murray. The play, set in Peterboro in August 1868 and based on the first recorded baseball game played by girls, features Ken Drake as Gerrit Smith, Virginia Drake as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Donna Litwak as Mrs. Smith, Kathy Brodeur as the Village Busybody and Tom Lemery as the Keeper of the Peterboro Home for Destitute Children. The performance is free, thanks to the support of CNY Arts, and open to the public.

AARP’s Drivers Safety Class

The Oneida Public Library Board of Trustees will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s History Room, 220 Broad St. The public is invited to attend. The History Room permits barrier-free access to the physically handicapped.

The play, set in Peterboro in August 1868 and based on the first recorded baseball game played by girls, features Ken Drake as Gerrit Smith, Virginia Drake as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sarah Davies Hasegawa as Mrs. Smith, Kathy Brodeur as the Village Busybody and Tom Lemery as the Keeper of the Peterboro Home for Destitute Children. There is an admission fee for the Mansion House: $5 per adult, $3 per student, but free for O.C. members and children under 12 years of age.
