Red Cross Responds to Fires at Multi-Unit Dwellings in Chemung, Onondaga and Oswego Counties

Volunteers providing immediate emergency assistance for 35 people

Volunteers from the Central New York and Finger Lakes Chapters of the American Red Cross responded to three fires on Tuesday, providing immediate emergency assistance for 35 people. Red Cross assistance typically includes funding for temporary housing, food and clothing as needed, and specially-trained Disaster Mental Health volunteers are available to help those affected deal with the emotional aspect of their disaster. Affected families will meet with caseworkers in the coming days to work on a long-term recovery plan.

Early Tuesday morning, volunteers in Oswego County assisted a total of eight people from four families displaced by a fire on East Broadway in Fulton. Tuesday night, a Disaster Action Team from Onondaga County helped a total of 17 people from three families impacted by a fire on Buckley Road, Liverpool.

In the Finger Lakes, a fire that occurred Tuesday night on Grand Central Avenue in Elmira Heights affected a total of ten people from three families.

This past weekend across the Western and Central New York Region, volunteers responded to 17 separate fires, providing immediate emergency assistance to 89 people. In addition to Central New York and the Finger Lakes, the region includes the Greater Rochester, Southern Tier and Western New York Chapters.

The Red Cross asks everyone to help Sound the Alarm in Western and Central New York, and be part of the nationwide Red Cross effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires. As part of the Home Fire Campaign, the Red Cross is joining with fire departments and community groups nationwide to install free smoke alarms in homes that need them. For more information, or to schedule an alarm installation, please visit
