
Twenty-two 4-H members from Herkimer & Oneida Counties participated in the 3rd Annual Mohawk Valley 4-H Dairy & Livestock Show & Sale on September 24th at the Herkimer County Fairgrounds. Participants exhibited their dairy cattle, beef cattle & hogs at the one day, no fit show designed to give the 4-H members one last “fun” show of the season. Shows began with a showmanship division for each species. Master showman of each species received a chair. The chairs were donated by ATRASS Farm & Salmstead Farm.
Keith Campbell sorted through the 4-H members and dairy cattle and gave top honors Master Showman to Alissa Collins of Herkimer County. In the breed classes, Supreme Junior animal went to Jacinta vanLieshout of Oneida County with Holstein fall calf Brabant Airlift Lizzy. Taking home Supreme overall Champion of the dairy show was Abigail Wratten, Oneida County with her Aged Holstein cow Tora-MS Promote Luann. Abigail received a wheelbarrow full of products donated by Herkimer County Dairy Promotion. Other top honors with Junior Champions went to Autumn Borek with her Ayrshire, Elizabeth Schieferstine with her Brown Swiss & Madesen Spellman with her Milking Shorthorn. Receiving other Senior Champion honors were Abigail Wratten with her Ayrshire, Sam Donahoe with his Brown Swiss, Sophia Simmons with her Guernsey, Rose Simmons with her Jersey and Madesen Spellman with her Milking Shorthorn.
Cindi Shelley was charged with judging the livestock shows. In showmanship, top honors of Master Showman in the beef went to Laken Dyn of Herkimer County, in swine Eleonore Collins of Oneida County came out on top.
In the beef show, Laken Dyn took home top honors in the Market Steer contest with Danny. Eleonore Collins exhibited the Reserve Champion Market Steer and Natalee Collins (Oneida County) had the Champion Female with her junior calf Shirley. Eleonore’s market steer was also named Best Bred and Owned of the beef show, while she also exhibited the champion Prospect Steer. Laken’s Market Steer was later named Supreme Champion Livestock of the show.
Herkimer County 4-H member Logen Spellman exhibited the champion market hog.
Other participants in the show from Herkimer County were: Jordynn Alesia, Annabelle Allen, Seth Donahoe, Tyler Franklin, Natalie Fredericks, Anna Hawkes & Bryce Windecker. From Oneida County, other participants included: Emily vanLieshout and Isaac Wratten.
