Photography deadline 5 p.m. May 31

This June, the Utica Public Library will host its sixth annual “Through My Eyes” Photography Contest for adults aged 18 and up. To register for the contest, simply bring your entry to the main lobby by 5 p.m. Friday, May 31; submissions will be accepted starting at 8:30 a.m.

The first 70 entries will comprise the contest.

Cash prizes will be awarded in the following seven categories: Best of Show, Best Striking Use of Color, Best Social Commentary, Best Portrait, Best Architectural, Best Nature and Best Black and White.

All the details and rules are available in the main lobby of the library or on the library website. Entries that are not wall-display-ready (can be hung from a nail), will not be accepted. Winner’s reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, and category cash prizes will be handed out at that time. For more information, call 315.735.2279.

David Lloyd: The Welsh American immigrant-Utica experience

On Saturday, June 1, at 1 p.m., the Utica Public Library will host author David Lloyd as he presents a book reading and signing of The Moving of the Water: Stories Anchored in the Welsh American Immigrant Experience. Anchored in the community of first-, second- and third-generation Welsh Americans in Utica during the 1960s, the stories in David Lloyd’s The Moving of the Water delve into universal concerns: identity, home, religion, language, culture, belonging, personal and national histories and mortality. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. The event is free to the public.

Effective Communication Strategies for Alzheimer’s

On Monday, June 10, at 5:30 p.m., the Utica Public Library will host the Alzheimer’s Association as they present “Effective Communication Strategies for Alzheimer’s and Dementia” in the library gallery.

This program will examine how communication is not simply talking and listening, it’s also about sending and receiving messages through attitude, tone of voice, expression and body language.

Learn new ways to connect and decode messages delivered by someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

This lecture is free to the public. Registration is required. To register, call 315.617.4025.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, the Utica Public Library hosted a reception to announce the winners of its 11th annual Express Yourself Art Contest for adults. Cash prizes were awarded in six categories. The winners are Jim Dieffenbacher (Best of Show), Lynne Reichhart (Best Use of Detail) and Anthony Zambino (Best Use of Black and White).
