On Saturday Sept. 7th from 10 am to 5 p.m. the Madison County Historical Society will host their 55th annual Craft Festival. Come and enjoy one of the longest running juried craft festivals in central New York! A large selection of contemporary arts and crafts, ranging from functional to decorative 2-D and 3-D works including fabric, glass, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, metal, glass, floral, drawings, paintings, jewelry, photography, leather and wood. In addition onsite will be food vendors, entertainment, edible treat artisans, free children’s activities, and a wine tasting. More information to come!

On Monday Sept. 9th at 7 p.m. the Fabius Historical Society will host a special presentation about the history of the Forest Rangers. Local resident Chet Lunt will talk about the history of Forest Rangers. There is no charge for this event. Light refreshments will be served following the program. On Thursday Sept. 12th at 7 p.m. the Skanonh Great Law of Peace Center in Liverpool will host a special presentation by Steven Newcomb on the Doctrine of Discovery. Newcomb is a leading Indigenous scholar who has studied and educated about the doctrine of Christian Discovery. On Friday Sept. 13th at 6:30 p.m. the Morrisville Public Library will host a special presentation by noted railroad author John Taibi entitled “Eaton Hill & the Pecksport Loop.” Taibi will take attendees on a trip from Morrisville (Station) to Eaton where lies the summit of the grade from Oneida. Then you’ll head to Randallsville on the main line, hop on the Utica Division through Hamilton to Pecksport where you will gain the Pecksport Loop to return to the mainline at Whites Corners, from there you will take the main line back to Morrisville. On Saturday Sept. 14th from 10 am to 5:30 p.m. the Madison County Historical Society will host its annual hop festival. Come and hear guest speakers, talk to vendors, see special hop displays and the crowning of the Hop King & Queen all for FREE!!! 

2002 Hop King Al Bullard will be at the Carriage Barn starting at 10 a.m. Bullard is the author of Bittersweet: Hop Culture in Central New York, and will be available to answer questions about the exhibit, demonstrate the use of hop tools from his own collection and help visitors identify their own tools that they bring to the festival. At 2:15 Bullard will present Hop Equipment Manufactured in Central New York. Bullard will identify tools and equipment from specific manufacturing locations in Madison, Oneida, Otsego and Schoharie counties and show newly found tools. Visitors are encouraged to bring tools from their own collection for identification.

At 3:15 1998 Hop King Michael A Tomlan, PhD, will explain Why did the Hop Industry Move West? Tomlan, author of Tinged with Gold: Hop Culture in the United States, will look at the US hop industry from its early days in Massachusetts, to the robust agricultural industry in New York State and onward to the west. 

At 4:15 2000 Hop King Carl Stearns will present Relocating 19th Century Hop Houses. He will look at how Madison County has lost some of its oldest hop houses to the sale and move of these special structures. Stearns is a well-known CNY preservation architect and was the Chairman of the Madison County Bicentennial Architecture and Preservation Committee. He received an award from the NYS Barn Coalition for his work in rural preservation. He moved a forgotten Route 20 hop house to his own property and has worked on other relocation projects.

From 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. you can purchase tickets to the “Taste of Hops” tent where area restaurants create an appetizer utilizing craft beer as a main ingredient and pair it with a craft beer. Each year restaurants and caterers partake in a friendly competition vying for a variety of titles judged by the public who sample the fare. Attendees must be 21+ with valid ide to sample the craft beer. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 the day of the event. Attendees receive with a complimentary 5 oz. glass. On Sunday Sept. 15th from 9 am to 5 p.m. the Madison County Historical Society will close its annual event with a tour of Hop Houses. Retired Preservation Architect Carl Stearns and hop heritage promoter Dot Willlsey will be guides on this tour which includes hop houses, hop production sites and lunch at the Colgate Inn in Hamilton. On Sunday Sept. 15th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. the Lorenzo State Historic Site will host their annual Community Day. The restored Rippleton Schoolhouse will welcome kids of all ages to participate in period games, enjoy live music, fall refreshments, wagon rides, country school activities and more. On Sunday Sept. 15th at 2 p.m. Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse will host a special Cemetery Tour called “Fallin’ for Oakwood.” Don Leopold will lead this tour which focuses on the trees and plants of Oakwood Cemetery in the fall. All tours are rain or shine but will be cancelled for thunder and lightning. There is no charge for the tours but donations are encouraged. Tours start at the entrance near Comstock Avenue. On Wednesday Sept. 18th at 5 p.m. the Lincklaen House in Cazenovia will host our next History Where you Eat event. Cazenovia Library Archivist Elisha Davies and Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz will give a brief history of the restaurant & inn followed by a tour that will take you into places that you have probably never seen inside one of Madison County’s longest running restaurants. On Saturday Sept. 21st the Smithfield Community Center will host a special series of talks as part of its 2020 Centennial of Women’s Suffrage. Presentations by Denise Delucia of the Women’s Rights National Historic Park and Norm Dann will present on Elizabeth Smith Miller, Ann Carroll Fitzhugh Smith and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. On Saturday Sept. 21st at 1 p.m. the Lorenzo State Historic Site will host a presentation entitled “UnderWhere? 1905” at the Cazenovia Public Library. Join costume historian Kijrsten Gustavson to discover the layers of undergarments beneath an Edwardian woman’s fashionable dress. This lively talk will include reproduction corsets, bum pads, and petticoats on a live model to uncover what it felt like to wear all those clothes. Gustavson will also use period newspaper articles and fashion magazines to explore the impacts of mass production in the New York fashion industry from the factory, to the store, to the home. On Tuesday Sept. 24th at 7 p.m. the Limestone Ridge Historical Society will host a special presentation by John Taibi entitled “A Soldier’s Journey Through the Heart of the Park. A Story of Love, War and Railroading in the Adirondacks. Taibi will tell the story of his father’s return home after being a POW during WWII. Upon his return his Taibi’s father and mother were sent to a special camp meant to help returning soldiers come back to their life in the US. There is no charge for this event. On Saturday Sept. 28th from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum will host their annual “Pig & Swig” on the Canal. The fundraiser will showcase craft breweries & wineries from the Central New York region, live entertainment, BBQ-related food trucks and an all-around fun day for everyone. The proceeds of the event will benefit youth and educational programs provided by the Sullivan Community Council & Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum. On Saturday Oct. 5th at 10 am the Erieville/Nelson Heritage Society will host a cemetery tour starting at the Welsh Church. The tour will start at the Union Cemetery (Welsh Church) with a presentation by Thom Davis, the curator of Union Cemetery, about burial options at the cemetery. This will be followed by the a re-enactment of a soldier burial. From there attendees will travel to the Nelson Rural Cemetery where caretaker Fay Lyon will give a historical synopsis and some noted burial sites. There is no charge for this event. On Saturday Oct. 5th at 10:30 am the Canastota Canal Town Museum will host a walking tour of portions of Canal, North Main, Center and North Peterboro Streets. Starting at Canal Town Museum attendees will hear the stories of a number of buildings along canal street before moving south on North Main where they will hear about the Canastota Library and former Canastota Hospitals. From there the tour will head east on Center Street where stories about the Methodist Church, Free Church and Bruno building will be told. The tour will finish heading north on Peterboro street hearing about the buildings and the former canal bridge. The tour will take approximately 45 mintues to an hour and feature historic photos from the Canal Town Museum Collection. There is no charge for this event. On Saturday Oct. 12th at a time TBD The Lorenzo State Historic Site will host a special Black Locust Tree Bicentennial Celebration.

The black locust tree, which stands by the back door of Lorenzo, was planted to commemorate the Oct. 26, 1819 wedding of Jonathan Denise Ledyard, brother-in-law of John Lincklaen, to Jane Strawbridge. According to family tradition, following their wedding near Philadelphia, PA, the couple brought the tree with them to Lorenzo. On Saturday Oct. 12th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. the Onondaga Historical Association will host a special “Our Glorious Workplace” celebrating Hoffman Sausage Company at the Carrier Dome. Come and celebrate Hoffman’s 140th anniversary! The event will start with a cocktail hour and behind the scenes tour of the Carrier Dome. Dinner will include Hoffman products to prepared in unique and exciting creations. Following dinner OHA Curator of History, Robert Searing, will present on the 140-year history of Hoffman.
