Healthy Communities

(Hamilton, NY – March 2013) The Madison County Health Department and Madison County Office for the Aging, Inc. are sponsoring a free nutrition education program for Madison County residents with Type 2 diabetes.

The six-session series, “Eating Well with Diabetes” will be held in the Community Room at Madison Lane Apartments in Hamilton on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning April 16 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will continue through May 2.

Funding from the Hamilton-Bassett-Crouse Health Network allowed the county to bring the program back in 2012 after funding from the New York State Department of Health ended in 2010. The program was held twice last year at Office for the Aging in Canastota. Program planners are taking “Eating Well with Diabetes” to the southern part of the county to make it easier for residents in that area to attend.

Dina Lawson, Registered Dietician with Madison County Office for the Aging, will cover serving sizes, food label reading, menu planning, carbohydrate counting, and healthy cooking. Because the sessions build on each other, it is best to attend all sessions if possible.

This is a free program for people with Type 2 diabetes, so grab a family member or friend and join us for a fun learning experience.

Please call the Madison County Health Department at 366-2361 for more information or to sign up for the program. Space is limited to fifteen people.

The program brochure is available online at www.healthymadisoncounty.org in the calendar section or www.ofamadco.org.
