The WRight Way

By Ron Wright

(Cazenovia, NY- April 2013Wright, Ron) First, more facts on semi-automatic firearms: The semi-automatic type of firearm is “bad” according to some anti-gunners because, “They all are designed to spew out many bullets between reloading.”

Certain members of congress have called out to “Ban [all semis] all.” While many semi-automatics can fire quite a number of rounds between reloading, not all do. Many semi-automatic wild fowl shotguns are built for only three rounds: two in the magazine and one in the chamber.

The semi-automatic Browning Double Automatic shotgun is designed for only two rounds, one in the magazine and one in the chamber. The semi-automatic Winchester Model 55 rifle holds one shell in the chamber and has no magazine for a second shell. It automatically ejects the fired shell and you have to manually place a new shell in the chamber.

It has been interesting to listen to TV and radio commentators regarding the use of firearms in self-defense in the aftermath of recent tragedies like those in Colorado and Connecticut. Many anti-gun people also seem to be anti-self-defense, as well.

I can understand some individuals having reasons for not wanting to use a firearm in any situation. I cannot understand why anyone would reject most any type self-defense for themselves or their family – and even publicizing the fact. Wouldn’t it be a better idea to have a potential assailant wondering whether you do or do not have a gun or any other weapon in your house or on your person?

As I wrote previously, having a sign on your home, place of work or wherever something like GUN FREE ZONE just encourages the bad guys. This is tantamount to wearing a sign on your back saying KICK ME.

Not to psychoanalyze, but are we on to something here? What is it about some people who apparently think being a victim of a violent criminal is some sort of glorious state? Would you call it masochism or is there some other self-destructive mental condition involved?

A well-known anti-war activist is on record for stating, “Nothing is worth fighting for.”

I recall a letter-writer some time ago saying, “If some hostile totalitarian entity ever took over the United States, I would never fight them, but I certainly would reserve the right to protest against them.”

How do you spell the word ‘stupid?’

During the 1979 Iranian hostage situation, do you think the U.S. diplomats were finally released after more than a year in captivity because Americans were tying yellow ribbons around trees, if you recall? Or was it because the Iranian government knew that newly sworn-in President Reagan was ready to drop the hammer on Iran?

Some of the anti-gun commentators go to extraordinary lengths to avoid the self-defense (and self-reliance) issue. Many, when questioned, will not give a direct answer but either change the subject or wish away dangerous individuals and the mayhem they can incur.

One of my previous Courier columns tells about a victim living in a remote location waiting and pleading on the line for the police to hurry while her family was being brutalized. The setting was rural but just as easily could have been in an urban location. Minutes and seconds count. Flashing lights and the other police activity on the site of a crime all too often are after the victims have been hurt or killed.

Regarding another recent Colorado incident, a woman who had been raped by a much larger man was pleading with a Colorado legislator to allow easier access for citizens to carry concealed pistols. The legislator retorted: “Don’t you know that statistically the rapist could have gotten the gun away from you and hurt you with it?”

Do I need to say anything more here? In another dialog on TV recently, one of the commentators said, “The problem about this subject is that men can be trained not to rape, but we lack the funds for it.”

Another genius.

How about posting signs for all those would-be violent criminals out there?

If you will be nice, we will appreciate it.

We know you are now a bad boy because your mommy once said no more candy today.

If you have to go to jail, you will get free food, free medical, free lawyers and color tv.

Before you enter the bank, we would appreciate if you count the bullets in your clip so you won’t break the law.

  1. The real reason for the slow erosion of gun rights is so that we can’t defend ourselves, the contributors, against our own government when they finally reach the point of taking all of our property to support themselves and the mooches that voted for them. I have read various articles lately in sportsman’s magazines that mention honest sportsmen that don’t want to break the law. In my opinion the law needs to be broken, quietly, stealthily, in the privacy of our homes. Isn’t that how our forefathers were ready when needed?

  2. Yes, you do have to say more.

What “well-known anti-war activist is on record for stating, “Nothing is worth fighting for.””?

I can not find any such record.

And, what TV Commentator said this? “The problem about this subject is that men can be trained not to rape, but we lack the funds for it.”

Is it true? Do you believe it to be true?
