Clean-up, Projects Discussed; Budget Complete
By Margo Frink
(Canastota, NY – April 2013) The Canastota Village Board held a public hearing before its regular meeting April 15 on its 2013-2014 budget with plans to adopt April 22 at a 9 a.m. meeting.
The tax levy is a little more than $1.7 million. Taxpayers are expected to pay $9.82 per $1,000 of assessed value.
Also approved at the meeting was a recommendation from the recreation commission to hold Zumba classes at the high school. A May 9 introductory class is scheduled at no cost. Then a six-week session will begin sometime in June. Participants may sign up for all six weeks or single sessions at the village offices.
Village Administrator Larry Carpenter reported the clean-up of the building on E. Center Street is in the hands of the courts. The owner of the collapsed building must notify the judge of his plans to remove the remains.
Carpenter also said the village will acquire BOCES students again this year for summer projects around the village. This is the fifth summer students in eighth through 12th grade have provided help to the village.
DPW Foreman TJ Tornatore reported restrooms at the recreation field are open and new lights have been installed. The street sweeper will be in operation by this week and crews have clean-up on James Street due to a sewer collapse. Crews will begin picking up brush around the village soon, he said.
Interest in drawing up the design for the firemen/founder’s monument park has waned, according to fire Chief John Massarotti. He said a professor was interested but he has heard no more. Money has been invested in the granite and set aside for design of the park. Mayor Carla DeShaw said the original plan for founder’s park has been scaled back. The fire department will have more of the space available, although an area has been set aside for village founder Ruben Perkins.
The board will meet again May 6 at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Building.
