(Morrisville, NY – April 2013) Looking for a fun activity to do with the whole family? The public is invited to participate in “Don’t be a Spectator. Be a Sport,” a family fun night on May 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the recreation center at Morrisville State College in honor of Screen-Free Week.

Screen-Free Week is an annual event in which parents, children, teachers, and others across the nation turn off screen media (TV, video games, computers, cell phones) and celebrate the magic of being unplugged.

The event, sponsored by Morrisville State College’s human performance and health promotion (HPHP) program, will feature a variety of activities for all ages including kickball, T-ball, a soccer shoot, scavenger hunt and more.

There will also be T-shirt giveaways, prizes and refreshments.

“This event is all about getting families together,” said Lisa Rusch, assistant professor, HPHP.  “We try to have activities for the entire family so they can all have fun while exercising and getting healthy.”

A parent or guardian must accompany children during the event.

Safe Kids Upstate NY Coalition will also be participating at the event, providing bike helmets to children while supplies last, conducting free bike helmet fittings and sharing helpful tips on safety. Led by Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, Safe Kids Upstate NY Coalition will partner with member organizations including the Madison County Health Department and Madison County Sheriff’s Office to provide education and outreach to prevent unintentional injuries to children.

This event is sponsored, in part, by the Sheila Johnson Institute, whose mission is to provide support for diversity and character-building initiatives for Morrisville State College and the community.
