(West Winfield, NY – May 2013) A wide range of inexpensive, locally grown perennials, along with vegetable seedlings and annual bedding plants and hanging flower baskets, will be for sale at the Upper Unadilla Valley Association’s (UUVA) annual Plant and Garden Fair on Saturday May 18 at the Town of Winfield Park, Route 20 in West Winfield.
The sale, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will feature dozens of perennial varieties donated by local gardeners at prices ranging from $1 to $5 per pot. No plants will be sold before 10 a.m. Sirko’s Greenhouse of Leonardsville also will have a selection of annual bedding plants and hanging flower baskets, as well as some vegetable seedlings.
A selection of fine raw milk cheeses from Dutch Girl Cheese of Leonardsville also will be available to purchase. These cheeses, crafted by local resident and Holland native Renate Nollen, are prepared primarily by hand and in small batches from local goat, cow or sheep milk in the more classic tradition of artisan cheese makers.
A concession stand featuring home-made chili also will be on hand for those who come hungry.
At noon, the association will launch its annual “duck derby” in the park’s creek. The ticket purchaser of the fastest floating plastic duck will take home half the proceeds from the sale of derby tickets, which cost $3 each or two for $5. Tickets will be available at the fair or in advance from association directors and Davis Hardware in West Winfield. Call 855-4368 for the director nearest you.
The plant sale is held each year on the third Saturday in May. The UUVA is a non-profit organization that has worked for more than three decades to protect and preserve the Upper Unadilla Valley’s natural and historic resources. That region includes West Winfield, Unadilla Forks, Leonardsville, Bridgewater, West Edmeston and surrounding vicinities.
