Sokol Receives Recognition

(Chittenango) Michael Sokol of Chittenango was honored at the seventh annual Champlain College “Honoring Excellence” event for the newly named Robert P. Stiller School of Business. Sokol, a senior accounting major, received an Academic Excellence Award. The annual dinner, which took place at the Burlington Country Club, recognizes outstanding students and their achievements throughout the Robert P. Stiller School of Business.

Infarinato Earns Recognition

Georgia Southern University’s Annual Honors Day Convocation was held at the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center recently. Individual awards were presented to 188 students and various honor societies also recognized new inductees; among them was Nicole Infarinato from Oneida, who received the biology award – senior. The event is held each spring to highlight distinguished students from all disciplines and areas of college life.

Students Initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

The following local students were granted an achievement for being inducted into Phi Kappa Phi at The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi: Rosemarie Thresh of Chittenango, Sarah Segal of Oneida, Megan Matott of Sherburne and Michael Vecchio of Chittenango.

Monroe Inducted into National Honor Society

Lindsey Monroe of Sherburne was inducted into Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology, April 16 in a ceremony on the SUNYIT campus. Monroe was one of 17 student inductees taking part in the annual event.

Fehrman of Munnsville Named To Phi Theta Kappa

Hudson Valley Community College student Valerie Fehrman of Munnsville was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the international academic honor society for two-year institutions of higher learning. Fehrman is studying health information management and technology.

Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is indicative of academic excellence. Those inducted are matriculated students who have met standards including a grade point average of 3.71 or higher.

In November 1988, Hudson Valley established the Alpha Xi Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the only nationally recognized honor fraternity serving regionally accredited American institutions which offer associate’s degrees. Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is a highly coveted honor. Students eligible for membership must achieve a high cumulative grade point, be of good moral character, and possess recognized qualities of leadership. Induction into the chapter occurs in the fall and spring of each academic year. Scholarships to four-year institutions are available to Phi Theta Kappa members.

Haynes Graduates Saint John’s University

(Chittenango) Kayla Haynes will be graduating summa cum laude from Saint John’s University in Queens May 19. She is a presidential scholar with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, concentration on cyber security systems. She is graduating with honors, achieving the highest cumulative indices in the graduating class for computer science.

Haynes was awarded the Francis J. Flynn Award, given on the merits of excellence in mathematics and established in memory of Professor Francis J. Flynn, faculty member and first chairman of the Division of Computer Science, Mathematics and Science. It is presented annually to the computer science graduate having the highest index in mathematics.

Haynes, daughter of Alan “Corky” and Karen Haynes of Chittenango, is a 2009 graduate of Chittenango High School.

Pupp of Oneida Recognized at SUNY Canton Honors Convocation

Brandon M. Pupp a freshmen pre-engineering science major from Oneida, was honored for excelling academically at SUNY Canton’s 2013 honors convocation.

Popple of Canastota Recognized at SUNY Canton Honors Convocation

Francesca Popple, a junior graphic and multimedia design major from Canastota, was honored for excelling academically at SUNY Canton’s 2013 honors convocation. Popple also received a Canino Prize for Academic Excellence.

UAlbany Announces Winter 2012 Graduates

During its winter commencement Dec. 16, 2012, the University at Albany awarded 630 bachelor’s degrees and 440 graduate degrees; among them were the following students: Daniele Brodeur of Eaton graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts in theatre departmental and Lauren Frauenberger of Kirkville graduated with a master of science in mental health counseling.

Rose Named Member of SUNY Delhi’s American Institute of Architecture Students

Alexandra Rose of Oneida has been named a member of SUNY Delhi’s American Institute of Architecture Students for the 2012-13 academic year. Rose is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in architectural design and building.

Beaver Named Member of SUNY Delhi’s Association of Veterinary Technicians

Cassandra Beaver of Sherburne has been named a member of SUNY Delhi’s New York State Association of Veterinary Technicians for the 2012-13 academic year. Beaver is pursuing an associate’s degree in Veterinary Science Technology.

Students Achieve Academic Excellence at Buffalo State

The following students were recognized for outstanding academic achievement at Buffalo State’s 56th annual honors convocation: Bonnie Bethea, a political science major; and Tanya Percy, an anthropology major. Both women are from Canastota.

To qualify, students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have accumulated a minimum of 45 credit hours. Buffalo State’s honors convocation is held each spring to celebrate students who have achieved this level of academic excellence.

Patterelli Named Female Athlete of the Month at Herkimer County Community College

Herkimer County Community College has named two student-athletes to the Green and Gold Club for April 2013. The Female Athlete of the Month is Jessica Patterelli of Canastota (softball). Patterelli is a liberal arts and sciences: general studies major.

In 31 games, Patterelli has .583 BA, 15 2B’s, 7 HR’s, 45 RBI’s. She is 8-0 in the circle. Coach PJ Anadio said Jess has taken the next step this year as far as a player, student and person.

“She is our leader on the field and one of the fiercest competitors I’ve ever known,” Anadio said. “Our success the last two years is largely due to Jess Patterelli.”

HCCC’s Green and Gold Club honors an outstanding male and female athlete each month.

Morrisville State College honors students

The School of Science and Technology at Morrisville State College awarded scholarships to students during an event April 23.

Donia Al-Nasser of Oneida, a nursing major, was presented with the Malcolm B. Galbreath Scholarship; Jonathan Hill of Oneida, a residential construction major, was presented with the William Morehouse/Mohawk Valley Home Builders and Remodelers Scholarship; Rebecca Ives, of Earlville, a nursing major, was presented with the Follett Foundation Scholarship; Kayla Marris of Morrisville, an automotive technology management major, was presented with the Automotive Faculty Award; Daniel Mirocco of Morrisville, an automotive technology major, was presented with the David Vockins Memorial Award; Andrew Rogers of Oneida, a residential construction major, was presented with the William Morehouse/Mohawk Valley Home Builders and Remodelers Scholarship; Jonathan Ryan of Sherburne, a liberal arts math and science major, was presented with the Biology/Chemistry Faculty Award; Kara Sawyer, of Canastota, a nursing major, was presented with the Carolyn A. Thompson Memorial Scholarship; Brett Sheddon, of Sherburne, a sports nutrition and fitness management major, was presented with the Madge Snyder Scholarship; and Matthew Tarplee of Hamilton, a nursing major, was presented with the School of Science & Technology Award.

Rose Participates in All-Female SUNY Delhi Construction Project

Alexandra Rose of Oneida is one of six students involved in a unique learning opportunity: an all-female construction project on the SUNY Delhi campus. Rose is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in architectural design and building. The students are building a footbridge to be placed over Addison Pond. They are overseen by Professor Floyd Vogt of the college’s construction management program. The students chose this experiential learning opportunity as a way to volunteer their time and devote the project to women who are committed to learning non-traditional roles.

SUNY Oswego lists candidates for advanced degrees

Several local residents are scheduled to complete their graduate studies this year at SUNY Oswego and will be recognized May 18 at the college’s commencement. The following local residents (with their academic major in parentheses) are eligible to participate in the graduation ceremonies: Cynthia Todd of Bull Street in Bridgeport, graduate certificate (education leadership); Gilbert M. Wistrup of Midstate Lane in Cazenovia, master of science in education degree (business and marketing education); Matthew P. Berrigan of Salt Springs Road in Chittenango, master of business administration degree (accounting); and Sean R. Sharp of North Kirkville Road in Kirkville, master of business administration degree (accounting).

Hamilton Man Graduates from Coastal Carolina University

(Hamilton) John Dick of Hamilton graduated from Coastal Carolina University with a bachelor of arts in interdisciplinary studies Saturday, May 11. Approximately 950 candidates were eligible for graduation.

Students Earn Degrees from Binghamton University

The following students were recently awarded a degree from Binghamton University: Lee M Seversky from Canastota was awarded a Ph.D. in computer science from the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences at Binghamton University; and Kathryn Elaine Cherny from Cazenovia was awarded a BA in biological sciences from the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences at Binghamton University.

­ Cudney Named to Champlain College Dean’s List

Leland Cudney of Cazenovia has been named to the spring 2013 Champlain College dean’s list for academic achievements and achieving a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Cudney, son of Barbara and Raymond Cudney of Cazenovia, is majoring in game design.

Sokol Named to Champlain College President’s List

Michael Sokol of Chittenango has been named to the Champlain College President’s List as a full-time student achieving a spring 2013 semester grade point average of 4.0. Sokol, son of Susanne Carter and Gary Sokol of Chittenango, is majoring in accounting.

Morrisville State Honors ThomasGraduation cap green

(Morrisville) Morrisville State College liberal arts students were recently honored for their achievements during the 13th annual Liberal Arts Tea. Benjamin Thomas of Morrisville, a liberal arts: humanities and social science major, received the Humanities Student of the Year award. The event is part of the college’s annual celebration of academic excellence.
