(Madison County, NY – May 2013) Picking the winners of an essay contest is never easy, but this year’s Madison County OFA Day essay contest proved to be an unparalleled challenge.
Every child who submitted an essay received a certificate from the Office for the Aging. Each School that submitted essays for a particular grade has a winner.
Below are the essays printed exactly as written.
We wish to thank the schools, teachers and, especially, the students who participated.
Third Grade
Lynne Thielke – St. Patrick School, Oneida
What I can learn from an older person is to say nice words, be kind, have good manners, and do what your suppose to. It is always good to learn so you can do better at being good not bad, but the best thing is to make really good friends!
Fifth Grade
Tori Johnson – Brookfield Central School, Brookfield
I have learned a lot from my elders. My mom has always said to listen to my elders because they are very wise they have learned a lot as they grew up. My 4 sets of grandparent have always told me to do my best and never give up even when times get hard; also to always trust you’re self. That is what you can learn from an elder and always currish every thing they tell you because they are right.
Sixth Grade
Jensen Tanney – Brookfield Central School, Brookfield
What I can learn from an older person is, never give up. My sister, Tessa is an amazing role model. She has taught me so much over the years and she’s only 21. Tessa is going to be graduating soon, and one of the main things she has taught me is, always go to school! If you don’t go to school, you won’t be able to get a rewarding career. My sister, who will eventually graduate from college, makes her own money and does an internship on Thursdays. She has taught me to do what I want to in life, not what everyone says I should do. My sister is always reaching out to people in need, and I plan to be exactly like her.
Emma Costello – St. Patrick School, Oneida
I have learned many things from many people. All my teachings have made me who I am today. My Grandma Ella taught me to always make a wish as you enter a new church. She also taught me to live everyday to its fullest. For these things, I am thankful.
