(Wampsville, NY- June 2013) Have you wondered when to move your child to the next type of car seat and what that seat is? Have you ever wondered if your child’s car seat is buckled in tightly enough? Did you know that children are safest riding rear-facing until they are 2 years old or until they reach the highest weight allowed for their rear-facing seat? Did you know that New York state law requires children to be in an appropriate child safety seat until their eighth birthday?
Parents, grandparents and other caregivers want their children to be safe. These and all of your other questions about car seats can be answered by a nationally certified child passenger safety technician at a car seat check.
The Madison County Health Department and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office are teaming up with the New York State Police to hold a car seat check from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at the Parry’s parking lot, 100 Utica St., Hamilton.
For those in the northern part of the county, an event will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27, at Tops Friendly Market, 3400 Seneca Tnpk., Canastota.
To ensure that your child’s car seat is safe and installed correctly, be sure to stop by. Trained staff will check for recalls, make sure the seat is right for your child and ensure that the child and seat are properly buckled in the vehicle.
Staff will share the latest recommendations and teach you what you need to know to help your child ride safely.
While seats may be checked without the child present, bring the child with you if possible, so that staff can show you how the child should properly fit in the car seat. Make sure that you have installed the car seat in your vehicle, so that staff can check for any errors and teach you how to make any corrections.
No appointment is necessary.
This free event is open to the public and is made possible with funding from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.
