(Town of Lincoln, NY – June 2013DSC_0162DSC_0157) Flowers, flowers everywhere! Three members of the Green Thumb Garden Club of Oneida Castle worked in the blazing sun planting flowers at the Madison County Landfill.

The flowers consisted of Wave Petunias, Dahlias, Zinnias, Marigolds and Dusty Miller all arranged beautifully in two deck planters, a picnic table display, two bench arrangements at the Madison County Reuse Store and all around the flag pole.

Flowers are planted on an annual basis, but this was the first year that the Oneida Castle Garden Club was asked to participate. The Green Thumb Garden Club has been active for over forty years and has planted flowers at various locations around the community such as around the gazebos and flag poles at the Oneida Castle Park and in the circular garden.

The entire club visited the landfill in May for a tour of the site and a recycling presentation. They were amazed by the many innovative projects taking place at the County Landfill i.e. solar panels on the southern facing slope of the closed west side landfill, the gas-to-energy facility and the Reuse store to name a few.

“We asked them if they would be interested in helping us beautify the main office, store and entranceway,” said Recycling Coordinator Sharon Driscoll. “They said they were so impressed with all the programs and activities at the County landfill that they would be happy to contribute their expertise. The Green Thumb Garden Club ladies did a fantastic job.”
