(June 3, 2013) Students in the Allied Health Partnership program earned a $1,000 prize in a national contest that challenged students to take leadership roles in the fight against world hunger.

The prize money will be donated to the group’s selected charity, the Hope for Ariang Foundation. The foundation, founded in 2007 by Lost Boy Gabriel Bol Deng, works in South Sudan on issues of hunger, poverty and education.

The Lead2Feed contest allows middle and high school students to develop a focused service-learning project. Students selected a charity to partner with, created goals, devised an action plan and reported on the projected or actual results. The class connected with Ariang after Bol Deng visited their classroom earlier this year to share his story and talk about his work.

The class created a video about their proposal, which can be found on the Madison-Oneida BOCES Facebook page, www.facebook.com/madisononeidaboces.

Allied Health Partnership is a one-year program for high school seniors interested in medical and health-related career fields. It is run in partnership with Oneida Healthcare Center, and students gain first-hand experience in a real-life hospital environment, working alongside current healthcare professionals.

Eleven area residents joined the nursing ranks during a May 14 graduation ceremony for the adult Licensed Practical Nursing program.

The students have been taking LPN courses at the Rome ACCESS Site for the past 11 months under master instructor Barbara Croley. The program is part of the BOCES Consortium of Continuing Education, a partnership between Madison-Oneida and Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES that offers more than 200 programs to adults in 21 school districts.

Ashley Learned, of Chittenango, was this year’s class valedictorian and Sally Powell, of Oneida, was salutatorian. In addition, Adam Foley, of Utica, received this year’s Outstanding Performance in Geriatric Nursing Award.

The 2013 adult LPN class includes:

Brenda Buell, Eaton; Catherine Clements, Oriskany Falls; Adam Foley, Utica; Tara M. Grinnell, Taberg; Nicole Henson, Cleveland; Beatrice Holmes, Utica; Ashley Learned, Chittenango; Heather Mathis, Taberg; Kims Plantin, New Hartford; Sally Powell, Oneida; and Sarah Williamson, Vernon
