scoreboard.jpg for web(Cazenovia, NY – Aug. 2013) Thanks to a $20,555 donation from the Cazenovia Athletic Association, Cazenovia sports teams will start the 2013-14 school year with two brand-new, state-of-the-art scoreboards at the Sean M. Googin Sports Complex on Fenner Road and at Burton Street Elementary School’s athletic field.

The association presented the donation to the Cazenovia Central School District Board of Education during the board’s annual organizational meeting July 9.

“Contributions like this one are really made possible by the entire Laker community’s support of the CAA and, ultimately, the student athletes,” said Rick Race, CAA co-president. “Contributions big and small play a role: everything from the annual financial commitments of our membership, to the donations we receive from local organizations like the Lion’s Club, to the hot dog a spectator buys at a CAA-sponsored concession stand.”

The new Daktronics scoreboards will replace two aging specimens.

Purchased with money donated by Coca-Cola in the mid-1990s, the 15-year-old board on Field 1 at the Googin Complex uses a series of individual, incandescent light bulbs to display the score. The old-fashioned bulbs frequently burn out, skewing the scores and time.

The board at Burton Street, meanwhile, is about 10 years old and employs a system of flipping panels that often jam and for which replacement parts are no longer available.

The new scoreboards, by contrast, feature LED lighting and handheld, wireless consoles.

“The LED lighting is huge – no blown bulbs!” said Athletic Director J. Michael Byrnes. “Thanks to this major donation from the CAA, we’ll now have high-quality scoreboards that the community can be proud of for years to come.”

Cazenovia plays all varsity soccer games and varsity lacrosse games on Field 1 and all varsity, junior varsity and modified field hockey games on the athletic field at Burton Street Elementary.

“I would like to thank the officers and entire membership of the CAA for continuing to make Cazenovia Central Schools such a special place for our children to learn – both inside and outside the classroom,” Superintendent of Schools Robert S. Dubik said.

The installation of the new scoreboards is expected to take place in late August and be completed in time for the Lakers’ first soccer and field hockey games in the fall.
