Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison CountyIn Madison, Onondaga and Oneida County Region

(Madison County, NY – Oct. 8, 2013) Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County is excited to share the results of a recent local food market demand study.

The study offers a rough snapshot of regional agriculture and local food patterns in Onondaga, Madison, and Oneida Counties. The findings in the study are based on data gathered from a survey of national sources, a farmer’s market survey and qualitative interviews with local residents. Understanding the market demand for local foods in the regional economy has been increasingly important in recent years, due to the growing economic opportunities presented by connecting farms to consumers.

A few of the survey results offer specific opportunities presented by local food sales in the region. For example, the farmer’s market survey found that local consumers would purchase more berries, chicken and cheese if it was available at the farmer’s market. Also, the qualitative interviews identified education and convenience as key factors for increasing local food demand.
