Local herbalist stirring her soap pot again
(Clockville, NY – Dec. 2013) Debra Sturdevant has recently reopened her little eclectic soap and herbal sundries shop, The Country Artist, located on the corner of Watson and Nelson roads just south of the village of Canastota.
Educated in fine art and passionate about gardening and nature, she found her fulfillment in the study of herbalism more than 30 years ago, leading to the artisan creations lining her shop’s shelves. Fragrant soaps, lotions, salves and aromatherapy products created from botanical oils and butters are some of the products she creates.
After being away for three years to care for her ill mother, she had no doubt she would return to her soap business. Debra’s mother was her inspiration and her biggest fan instilling in her the love of nature.
“I always enjoy watching folks choose their favorite scents or helping them with specific needs,” Sturdevant said. “This time of year especially, winter skin requires more moisturizing and, with holiday stress, a little relaxing aromatherapy is always welcome!
“Customers know they can trust my products do not contain harsh preservatives and chemicals. I have been noted as saying you could probably consume a lot of my formulations, but they are better suited for use on the body.”
The botanical soap shop is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 to 5 or by appointment by calling 315.697.7404.
