H-25-2013 mccmc (Robotic Milestone) (2)Oneida Healthcare Center news

(Oneida, NY – Dec. 2013) Oneida Healthcare first introduced the single site surgery robotic platform to Central New York and now can lay claim to another first. The Oneida Healthcare da Vinci robotic surgery team has completed more single site gallbladder removals than any other hospital in the region.

The minimally-invasive surgical procedure performed at Oneida Healthcare is traditionally called a laparoscopic cholecystectomy (removal of the gall bladder). Using robotic assistance, surgeons remove the gallbladder through just one small incision in the belly button. Benefits of this surgical approach include virtually scarless results, minimal pain, low blood loss, fast recovery and a short hospital stay.

The surgery can be performed in about an hour with a typical hospital stay of less than 24 hours.

Neither robotic surgery nor single-incision surgery is new, but combining the two to remove the gallbladder requires additional training and special equipment.

“To be the first hospital in the region to offer this technically advanced surgery demonstrates Oneida Healthcare’s leadership in providing patients with the most up-to-date minimally invasive surgical options,” said Dr. Pedro DelPino, who has performed more robotic gallbladder procedures than any other surgeon in Central New York.

Oneida Healthcare’s team of five specially trained surgeons perform a variety of GYN, colorectal and other general surgery robotic procedures in the hospital’s state-of-the-art OR’s. For more information, visit www.oneidahealthcare.org.
