Students Enroll at SUNY Oneonta

(Madison County, NY) About 1,100 new students, selected from more than 12,000 applicants, began their studies at SUNY Oneonta Wednesday, Aug. 28. Among them were Emily Palmer of Sherburne, Logan Stoltman of Georgetown, Megan Viera of Sherburne and Caitlin Weinell of Sherburne.

Haynes Earns Honors

(Chittenango) Alanna Haynes, daughter of Alan “Corky” and Karen Haynes of Edwin Street, Chittenango, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2013 semester at SUNY Cortland. She is a 2011 graduate of Chittenango High School.

LPNs Graduate

Eighteen area residents earned their practical nursing licenses during an August 14 graduation ceremony held at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School. The students completed an 11-month LPN training program through the BOCES Consortium of Continuing Education (BCCE) and are now licensed to practice at a health care facility.

Among them were Gabrielle V. Bandera-Motley, Amanda L. Conners, Anna Shortell and Megan T. Wilsey, all of Canastota; Jennifer M. Gloska of Durhamville, Ashley V. Merrell of Oneida and Crystal L. Miller of Morrisville.

During the ceremony, three students were recognized for their outstanding work during the course: Shortell was valedictorian. Conners delivered the student address to her classmates.

Foster Enrolls at Lebanon Valley College

(Canastota) Lebanon Valley College welcomed Shea S. Foster to its beautiful Annville campus in August 2013. Foster is beginning a challenging and sophisticated course of study as a freshman psychobiology major, and will be taking classes from some of the most innovative faculty on campus. A graduate of Canastota High School, Foster hails from Canastota.

Klish serving as Orientation Leader at Heidelberg University

(Canastota) Daniel Klish of Canastota is serving as an Orientation Leader at Heidelberg University this summer. Klish, a junior majoring in sports management, has joined 31 other Orientation Leaders whose job is to provide incoming students and their parents a welcoming and informative orientation experience.

Orientation Leaders serve as resources throughout the four summer orientation sessions, answering questions, providing directions and assisting new students as they register for classes.

Orientation Leaders are selected based on their abilities in leadership, dedication to Heidelberg, integrity, responsibility, academic achievement, cheerfulness, maturity and interpersonal skills.

Residents Named to State Association of Veterinary Technicians

Local residents named members of SUNY Delhi’s New York State Association of Veterinary Technicians for the 2013-14 academic year. Among them were Cassandra Beaver of Sherburne and Sierra Crowe of Waterville, both earning the degree of Veterinary Science Technology.

Lusher To Perform With the New York Philharmonic

(Oneida) Andrew Lusher of Oneida will perform Handel’s Messiah with the Westminster Symphonic Choir and the New York Philharmonic conducted by Andrew Manze Dec. 17 through 21 at Lincoln Center in New York City. Andrew is a student at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, N.J., where he is a member of the Westminster Symphonic Choir.

Composed of students at Westminster, the Westminster Symphonic Choir has recorded and performed with major orchestras under virtually every internationally acclaimed conductor of the past 79 years. Recognized as one of the world’s leading choral ensembles, the choir has sung more than 350 performances with the New York Philharmonic alone.

Students Receive Awards from Clarkson University

(Munnsville) Charles Wilson of Munnsville, a junior majoring in civil engineering, received The Phalanx Commendable Service Award for Sophomores from Clarkson University at the University Recognition Day ceremony during the spring semester.

A limited number of Commendable Service Awards are presented annually to freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students, faculty, staff and administration members who have demonstrated quality in service to their area/organization. The award candidate should be a well-rounded individual who excels in all aspects of college life and is especially dedicated to serving his or her organization.

Phelps Earns Honors

(Chittenango) Bradley Phelps of Hills Street, Chittenango, a physical education major at SUNY Cortland, was named to the president’s list for the spring 2013 semester at SUNY Cortland. He is a graduate of Chittenango High School.

Canastota High School Junior to Serve as FBLA State Vice President

S-25-2013 mccmc (Schools) (2)(Canastota) A Canastota High School FBLA student, Derick Trost, recently completed his mandatory Future Business Leaders of America State Officer Training in Greenwich. Trost will serve as state vice president for District 7, which includes Herkimer, Madison and Oneida counties. He was elected to his position last April in Rochester at the New York State FBLA Leadership Conference.

During State Officer Training, Trost worked vigorously with the entire State Officer Team to accomplish their requirements for the week. Together, the officers worked on the New York State theme, charity and program of work for the year. During the week, officers gave speeches and presentations and attended leadership workshops on topics such as Plan of Action, Business Communications, Accountability, Public Speaking and Effective Presentations, Parliamentary Procedure and other leadership-related topics.

New this year, a joint meeting was held with representatives from other Career and Technical Student Leadership Organizations, where state officers from other groups discussed their common goals and direction for the future.

FBLA is a non-profit nationwide high school organization. New York state has more than 4,000 members. Students compete in various business- and technology-related competitions and learn all about business and leadership excellence.

Community service is also an integral part of FBLA.

On Nov. 1, Trost coordinated the Fall District Meeting for District 7 to be hosted by the Utica School of Commerce in Utica. The 2013-14 New York State FBLA theme is “Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence.” This year marks New York state’s 50th anniversary as a state association. The officers also voted to support the March of Dimes as their state charity.

Residents Achieve Dean’s List at SUNY Delhi

(Madison County) The following students have been cited for academic achievement for the Spring 2013 semester by achieving the dean’s list at the SUNY College of Technology at Delhi:

Benjamin Dewan of Cazenovia, golf course management: superintendent major; Mackenzie Funari of Canastota, construction management – design and building major; Alexandra Rose of Oneida, architectural design and building major; Joanna Stump of Bridgeport, bachelor of science in nursing major; and Cameron Yerton of Sherburne, carpentry and building trades major.

To qualify for the dean’s list, students must have an academic average of 3.50 or higher and take six credit hours or more within the semester.

Hatch of Oneida Earns Award at Nazareth College

(Oneida) Kelsey Hatch of Oneida earned the President’s Community Service Award at Nazareth College this spring for demonstrating a commitment to service, either to the Nazareth College community or the greater community at large.

The awards were given to students during a Civic Engagement Awards Ceremony celebrating the commitments that Nazareth students, faculty and staff make towards leading a civically engaged life, volunteering time and talents to our community, and inspiring others to become caring, active and informed members of our society.

The following local students were among the 548 students awarded a degree at St. Lawrence University’s Commencement ceremony, held May 19 on campus in Canton, New York.

Carter E. Franz of Cazenovia, was awarded a degree in economics. Franz graduated from Cazenovia High School.

John R. Glass of Cazenovia, was awarded a degree in government. Glass graduated from Cazenovia High School.

William D. Keever of Hamilton, was awarded a degree in biology. Keever graduated from Hamilton Central School.

Elizabeth M. McGinley of Canastota, was awarded a degree in history. McGinley graduated from Canastota High School.

Bridgeport’s Heenan Finalist in National Electronic Media Competition

(Bridgeport) Clarkson University student Ellen Heenan of Bridgeport, a senior majoring in engineering and management, was named one of five finalists in the Best Video Feature Segment category on the 2013 National Undergraduate Student Electronic Media Competition sponsored by the National Broadcasting Society.

The video was created for a group project in the COMM 330 Science Journalism course, taught by Communication & Media Professor Stephen Farina.

The students researched, wrote, directed, shot, and edited “North Country Robotics: Building Leaders in Technology,” a three-minute video feature about the FIRST Robotics Competition sponsored by Clarkson in fall 2012.

Chabot of Munnsville Completes Clarkson School Early College Program

(Munnsville) On Saturday, May 4, 49 students completed The Clarkson School Early College Program at Clarkson University. Corey Chabot from Munnsville was among the students receiving this honor.

Marsland Graduates from St. Olaf College

(Oneida) Max Marsland of Oneida graduated from St. Olaf College. Marsland is a History and Social Studies Education major. Marsland is the son of Charles and Ann Marsland.

Patterelli Honored

The Herkimer County Community College women’s softball team won the 2013 National Junior College Athletic Association Division III National Championship May 18 in Rochester, Minn. The Generals had a 4-0 record in the national tournament and a season ending record of 43-2. Several players earned awards at the Regional Tournament as well as at the World Series National Tournament. Among them was Jessica Patterelli of Canastota, First Team Member, All Region Award at Regional Tournament; Region III All-Tournament Team.

Cerio Named to the Saint Anselm College dean’s list

(Canastota) Shea M. Cerio, a criminal justice major, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2013 semester at Saint Anselm College, Manchester, NH. Cerio, a resident of Canastota, is a member of the class of 2013. To be eligible for this honor, a student must compile a grade point average of 3.0 or better.

Wilson Named to Dean’s List at Hudson Valley Community College

(Munnsville) Trisha Wilson of Munnsville, New York was named to the dean’s List at Hudson Valley Community College for the Spring 2013 academic term. Each fall and spring term, the college’s dean’s list honors those students who have a term grade point average between 3.0 and 3.5. Wilson is in the diagnostic medical sonography academic program at the Troy college.

Students Named to President’s List at Hudson Valley Community College

Several local students were recently named to the president’s list at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy for the spring 2013 academic term. Among them were Kimberly Jones of Kirkville, Computer Information Systems: Web Design and WWW Programming student; and Morgan Cowherd of New Woodstock, a Mortuary Science student.

Each fall and spring term, the college’s president’s list honors those students who have a term grade point average between 3.5 and 4.0.

Mohr Honored at End of Year Ceremony

Forty Herkimer County Community College student athletes were presented awards at an end of year ceremony held recently. Among them was Scott Mohr of Chittenango, Men’s Tennis, MVP.

Willis of Canastota Graduates from Clemson University

Jeffrey Alan Willis of Canastota graduated Cum Laude from Clemson University May 10, with a bachelor of science in Bioengineering. Willis was among 3,053 students who received degrees at three commencement ceremonies at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Sheridan of Oneida Earns Degree from University of Scranton

(Oneida) Kathleen A. Sheridan of Oneida was among the record number of graduate degree recipients who earned degrees from The University of Scranton at its post-baccalaureate commencement May 25. Sheridan earned a master of science degree with a major in occupational therapy.

Nazareth College Announces 2013 Graduates

Nazareth College undergraduate students were among a class of 570 earning their bachelor’s degrees at the 86th annual commencement ceremony that took place at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, May 12. Among them were Kayla Mercer and Hadley Pendleton, both of Oneida.

Klish Named to Heidelberg University Dean’s List

Heidelberg University Provost Dr. David Weininger has released the names of 305 students named to the spring semester dean’s list. Included on the list is Daniel Klish, a sophomore Sport Management major from Canastota. To be named to the dean’s list, students must be enrolled full time and meet academic criteria set forth by the university.

Ithaca College Honors Morrisville Student Molly Church

Ithaca College’s Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education has honored Morrisville student Molly Church with its Professional Excellence Award. The honor was presented May 15.

Located in the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance, the department gives the Professional Excellence Award to students who embody the department’s long tradition of knowledge and achievement.

Church graduated cum laude in May with a bachelor’s in health and physical education (teaching).

Wilkes University Awards Degrees

Some 746 doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degrees were awarded at Wilkes University May 18.

Ryan Burdick of Madison received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology.

Oot Named to Dean’s List at York College of Pennsylvania

Travis Oot of Kirkville, a senior accounting major at York College of Pennsylvania, has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2013 semester. To be eligible for this honor, a student must be registered for at least 12 academic credit hours and earn a semester GPA of 3.50 or higher.

Nazareth College Graduate Students Earn Degrees

Nazareth College graduate students were among a class of 486 earning master’s or doctoral degrees at the 86th annual commencement ceremony that took place at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester May 12. Among them was Sarah Segal of Oneida.

Providence College Awards Undergraduate Degree to Oneida Resident

Andrew Kelly, a resident of Oneida was among more than 900 students from Providence College who received undergraduate degrees during the College’s 95th commencement exercises held May 19. Kelly graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in finance.

Students Graduate from Champlain College

Four hundred seventy undergraduates received their degrees May 4 at Champlain College. Among them was Michael Sokol of Chittenango received a bachelor of science degree in accounting with a possible specialization or minor.

SUNY New Paltz Celebrates Graduate Commencement

More than 260 graduate candidates participated in the SUNY New Paltz graduate commencement ceremony May 17 to celebrate their achievements in the presence of their family and friends.

Marsland Honored for Academic Achievement at St. Olaf College

Max Marsland of Oneida was among nearly 900 St. Olaf College students who were recognized for academic achievement at the college’s annual Honors Day convocation May 3. Marsland is a history and social studies education major. In addition, he was awarded membership in Phi Alpha Theta. He is the son of Charles and Ann Marsland.

Students Earn Degrees from the University of Vermont

More than 2,550 students were awarded a variety of bachelor’s degrees during the University of Vermont’s 211th Commencement ceremonies May 19. Among them were Vincent M. Santoro of Hamilton, who received a BA in sociology and Chelsey P. Haflett of Munnsville, who received a BS in social work.

Thirty-five SUNYIT Athletes Recognized with NEAC Scholar-Athlete Award

Thirty-five SUNYIT student-athletes were recognized by the North Eastern Athletic Conference with the conference’s Scholar-Athlete award. The number of Wildcat selections in 2012-13 more than doubles the school’s numbers for the past two seasons, in which SUNYIT had 16 NEAC Scholar-Athlete selections.

In order to be selected, a student-athlete must achieve a combined grade point average of 3.4 or higher for the fall and spring semesters and must have been in good standing on his or her team. This year, NEAC honored a total of 512 scholar-athletes from its 16 member institutions (3 associate) who represent 26 different states and 17 different countries.

Among those honored were Jamie Elderbroom of Chittenango, women’s soccer, junior majoring in business administration; and Brett Gifford of Cazenovia, men’s lacrosse, junior majoring in mechanical engineering tech.

Davies Named to Assumption College Dean’s List

Emily Davies of Cazenovia, class of 2013, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2013 semester at Assumption College. To make the dean’s list, Assumption students must achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Spring 2013 Graduates of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Students who earned degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in May include Michelle Riedman of Kirkville, who earned an MS in Civil Engineering and Madelaine Saunders of Cazenovia, who earned a BS in Chemical Engineering.

Students Win Brockport Scholarships

The College at Brockport, State University of New York, has awarded scholarships to members of its incoming freshman class who have demonstrated academic excellence. Among them were Kaylee De Zalia of Canastota, awarded the Honors Scholarship; Sarah Hannan of Canastota, was awarded the Dean’s Scholarship; and Megan Legro of Kirkville, awarded the Dean’s Scholarship.

Brockport awards three different types of scholarships to its incoming freshman. Freshman must live on-campus in order to be considered for the awards.

Brockport’s Dean’s Scholarship goes to freshmen who are in the top 25 percent of their class, have a 90 or higher average and scored either an 1,100 or higher on their SAT exam or 24 or higher on their ACT exam.

The Honors Scholarship is awarded to any freshman who is accepted into Brockport’s Honors Program. To be accepted into this program, students must have a 92 or higher high school average and have scored 1,150 or higher on their SAT exam or 26 or higher on their ACT exam.
