Regatta for web

(Town of Lenox, NY – May 2014) Sailors and spectators alike will be setting a course for Oneida Lake May 31 and June 1 for a J/24 Class District 7 Pennant Series Regatta.

The two-day, five-race event is sponsored by the Oneida Lake Sailing Club and will set sail from Callahan’s and Oneida Lake Marinas on the southeast corner of the lake off NY Route 31. Racing on the eastern end of Oneida Lake will be visible from North and South Bay as well as the Verona and Sylvan Beach areas.

OLSC Commodore Perry Tooker along with the regatta committee is enthusiastic about sponsoring a “well organized and executed series of competitive races that will be both fun and challenging for J/24 crews and entertaining for spectators both on and off the water.” OLSC has an enthusiastic and experienced membership eager to provide hospitality and great racing to crews throughout the region.

Racing will commence both Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. with registration, check-in and skipper’s meetings beforehand. Weekend festivities will also include a Friday happy hour, dinner on Saturday, and a complimentary awards picnic concluding the event on Sunday afternoon.

OLSC race captain Lou Scheiderich is confident that the minimum of five races will be well officiated in accordance with “The Rules of Sailing”, prescriptions of U.S. Sailing, applicable J/24 class rules, and the Sailing Instructions.

“We have a trained and experienced race committee on the water who’ve attended race management training and will be well positioned to conduct and monitor the regatta,” Scheiderich said.

The courses to be sailed will be windward-leeward (upwind-downwind) and will utilize orange and yellow inflatable buoys. The number of legs will be determined at race time based on wind speed, with each race approximately one hour.  Courses may have a downwind or upwind finish and will utilize a gate as the leeward turning point.

A hoist will be available at Callahan’s Marina for launching sailboats, with temporary dockage provided, beginning Friday, May 30, from noon to 8 p.m. Space for camping is also present at Callahan’s and Oneida Lake Marinas.

The Notice of Race for the regatta and registration information is posted on the Oneida Lake Sailing Club web page at www.oneidalakesailingclub.org/Racing/J24_regatta.cfm.
