To the Editor:
(Madison County, NY – Sept. 2014) I am honored and humble by the turnout for the reception held on my behalf by Madison County Republican Committee Chairman Kenneth Kunkel and Sullivan Republican Committee Chairman G. James Traub. It was great to have the opportunity to touch base with all of you and report on the progress of the campaign, which continues to gain energy and support.
One of the primary focuses of my campaign is small business.
The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has released the voting scores for Assembly members from 2013-14. It is time to remove from Albany elected officials who continuously fail to help our great state’s small businessmen and -women.
Our communities desperately need an economic boost. Our entrepreneurs need to feel they can grow a successful business here in New York state. The migration of bright and hardworking business owners out of New York state is alarming. This ranking is indicative that, now more than ever, our district needs to elect someone with an experienced business background.
I know how difficult it is to own and operate a successful small business in our state. In 1993, I started my own chimney cleaning and repair business that employed two full-time workers with more than 500 customers in five counties. After eight years of success and expansion, I was forced to shut down the business because the excessive regulations passed in Albany had increased to the point of suffocation. Career politicians continue to pass these constricting laws, ensuring small businesses are no longer able to operate in New York state.
As your next assemblyman, one of my top priorities will be revitalizing our business community. There is enormous potential here in Central New York for the expansion of a flourishing business sector. There is an abundance of resources and labor waiting to be given the opportunity to contribute to our economy. Laws and regulations passed in Albany should not obstruct entrepreneurs from conducting their own small businesses. More advocates of business need to replace politicians who constantly vote no to bills that would aid the dying business climate.
I want to be that voice in Albany this upcoming legislative session. I have personal experience and knowledge in what small businesses desperately need in today’s times, and I know what regulations hurt entrepreneurs.
It is time for Central New York to be home to a strong business sector once more.
Thank you again to everyone who has carried petitions, attended my fundraisers, made contributions, accompanied me while going door-to-door or put up my campaign signs. I look forward to serving you as your next assemblyman in the very near future.
John Salka, Brookfield, candidate for NYS AD121
