Submitted by Chris Rossi for Hamilton Town Council

(Town of Hamilton, NY – Sept. 2014) The Hamilton Town Council’s September meeting began with good news from Mayor Margaret Miller about grant money received to build a new taxiway at the airport. In addition, the Village of Hamilton has hired a new administrative assistant, Nancy Mitchel, who will start work in November.

Our Town Garage completed the creation of a berm and filtration system to protect the area from salt run-off. Thanks to the Madison County Soil and Water Conservation District for working with the Town to design and execute the project. The Town is researching sheds to securely house the salt in future, and grant money to fund the work.

Welcome to Bob Piersma, the new Codes Enforcement Officer for the Town of Hamilton. Bob will have hours at the Town Office and can also be reached by phone. Please call the Town office or visit our webpage for contact information.

The Town Council is preparing a draft 2015 budget, which will be reviewed at a public meeting on Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. in the Town office. In addition, the Town Council will hold a public hearing on an override of the 2 percent tax cap at its next regular meeting on Oct. 9.

SOMAC has been reorganizing and recalculating what is needed to adequately serve the Town of Hamilton. Changes in the availability of volunteers, subsequent use of professional paid staff and the need to transport patients to specialty care centers, among other changes, have driven up costs and created a budget shortfall. The Town Council believes SOMAC is vital to the health and safety of our community, and therefore is contributing funds to ensure the organization can continue to provide good service. We will be working with SOMAC to explore sustainable ways to keep the group viable.

Hunting season is upon us and the Town office is issuing permits. Deer damage is a real problem in Hamilton and there is an out of season alternative for landowners whose property is suffering extensive impacts. Look for our Deer Damage Permit (DDP) posters displayed around town. These permits are available to landowners through the local Department of Environmental Conservation Office Bureau of Wildlife for region 7. Call for details – 607-753-3095, ext. 247.

The Hamilton Town Council meets on the second Thursday of the month at the Town of Hamilton office located at 16 Broad Street at 7 p.m. The next regular meeting is Thursday, Oct. 9. We invite and encourage you to join us.
