To the Editor:

(Oct. 2014) October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence impacts rural and urban areas; it doesn’t discriminate. Sadly, it is an all-too-common occurrence, and we must strengthen protections for domestic violence victims as soon as possible.

According to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, there were almost 300 reported cases of domestic violence in Madison County last year. If you’re a victim, it’s important to know that you aren’t alone. There is a program located in Oneida called Victims of Violence (VOV), which provides free and confidential support with a 24-hour hotline, a safe house for female victims and their children, counseling, support groups and assistance with filing applications for victim compensation. If you know someone seeking help, call the VOV hotline at 315-366-5000.

For victims of domestic violence, reaching out for help can be a scary prospect, but if you or a loved one is suffering, I urge you to make the call. If ever I can offer assistance to you, a friend or a family member, my door is always open.

Sincerely,

Bill Magee
