(Canastota, NY – Dec. 2014) Canastota letter carrier Lisa Riley was given a hero’s recognition at a ceremony Nov. 20. The honor comes from the U.S. Postmaster General after Riley saved an elderly Canastota man who lost control of a moving lawn mower during a period of extreme heat.

In the letter from the Postmaster General, Riley is recognized for her “selfless display of civic duty” for coming to the aid of an elderly man who was losing control of a lawn mower.

“Once you helped stabilize the lawn mower and led him to a shady area, you contacted his daughter and stayed with him until she arrived,” the letter reads. “Through the faithful completion of their daily rounds and by going the extra mile for customers whenever needed, rural carriers maintain and strengthen this proud tradition of service to the community.”

In attendance were Acting Albany District Manager Thomas Kelley, Acting Canastota Postmaster Torry Lesh and employees of Canastota Post Office.
