(Cazenovia, NY – Feb. 2015) Cazenovia College is pleased to present “We the People: Linking Journalism to Public Policy” — a lecture by Greg Munno on Wednesday Feb. 18 at 5 p.m. in McDonald Lecture Hall, located in Eckel Hall (Lincklaen Street).
Munno, a former reporter for the Syracuse Post Standard, and now a Ph.D. candidate and civic engagement professor at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, will speak about civic engagement and the collaborative initiatives he spearheaded to promote civic engagement in Central New York. He will focus specifically on his CNY Speaks initiative, an effort he founded in 2008 in conjunction with the Post Standard to spark constructive conversations with Central New Yorkers about critical issues in the region. Munno will also discuss his career as a journalist, and civics professor at Syracuse University, as well as his personal take on Central New York’s political climate and elected officials.
Munno’s talk will focus on how participatory and data journalism are being used in newsrooms today.
According to Munno, “The digital technologies that have disrupted traditional journalism have also given rise to new forms of journalism with the power to inform and evaluate public policy. Participatory journalism systematically engages and focuses the public on issues of importance, generating both the information and the impetus on which government can act. Meanwhile, Data Journalism gives reporters new tools for the rigorous evaluation of how public policy is actually working on the ground.”
