Oneida police patch(Oneida, NY – Feb. 23, 2015) With an increase in winter weather related complaints Oneida City Police would like to share the following information to remind citizens of the laws pertaining to these issues that have come up.

Snowmobiles

The operation of snowmobiles on city streets is prohibited except for those designated for use to gain access to trails. Those streets are listed as follows;

North Lake Street, between Verona Street and N. Main Street (Route 46).

Williams Street, north of and between the railroad tracks and northerly city limits.

Cobb Street, between Williams Street and Canal Road.

Canal Road, between Schoolheimer Road and Cobb Street.

Dump Road, from Route 5 to a point 2,700 feet south of Route 5.

Stephens Street between Lenox Avenue and E. Walnut Street.

Lake Road (Route 316) between N. Main Street (Route 46) and Canal Road.

The following are prohibited;

Operating with 125 feet of a dwelling.

Operating in city parks.

Operating in the inside district between 11pm and 6am.

New York State Parks and Recreation Laws are available on line for state snowmobile laws. Oneida Police have issued summonses for violations and investigated one accident involving a snowmobile struck by a vehicle.

Snow Removal

It is illegal to deposit snow in any manner as to obstruct the view at intersections of public streets. It is illegal to deposit snow on city streets or sidewalks or to obstruct fire hydrants. It is illegal to deposit snow onto another person’s property without their permission.

Motor Vehicle Accidents

This past weekend Oneida City Police responded to 12 motor vehicle accidents in which slippery roads, obstructed views and imprudent speed were contributing factors. Motorists attempting to enter the highway from a driveway, parking lot or intersecting street are reminded to use caution as they slowly move out to check for approaching traffic.

Motorists on the highway are urged to slow down and to watch for vehicles entering the highway from side streets, parking lots or driveways and be aware of the obstructed view for those drivers. Motorists traveling on snow covered roads should reduce their speed and allow additional distance for stopping.
