(Utica, NY – March 2015) State Senator Joseph Griffo of Rome and Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi of Utica announce that applications are being accepted for the New York State Conference of Italian-American State Legislators scholarships.  Four $2,500 scholarships will be awarded in June at the organization’s annual Conference Weekend.

“This program is an excellent opportunity for students to get some help with the cost of a college education,” Brindisi said.  “I would urge anyone who is interested to contact my office so that we can mail or email a scholarship application to you.”

“No one should feel that a college education is out of their reach because it is too expensive, and this scholarship is an opportunity that can provide the extra financial aid a student might need to pursue his or her educational goals,” Griffo said.

Griffo and Brindisi say there are an academic scholarship and an athletic scholarship.  To qualify for either scholarship, students should have at least an 85 grade point average; be able to demonstrate financial need; and show participation in community or extra-curricular activities.

Scholarship applications should be returned to Griffo or Brindisi’s office by Monday, April 27 to qualify.  Scholarship recipients will be invited to Albany to receive their scholarship awards in June.  The Conference is a bipartisan organization of State Legislators who actively promote and celebrate the state’s Italian-American community.  The organization highlights Italian-American contributions to the State in all aspects of society, including in literature, the arts, architecture, and politics, and to work to dispel negative stereotypes of Italian-Americans.

Area students who would like an application may contact Griffo’s office at griffo@nysenate.gov or by calling (315) 793-9072, or contact Brindisi’s office at brindisia@assembly.state.ny.us, or by calling (315) 732-1055.
