canal clean sweep(Bouckville, NY – April 2015) Spring brings a breath of fresh air when the Chenango Canal Association (CCA) hosts the 9th annual Canal Clean Sweep and the 14th year of Trail Days on the Towpath Trail on Sunday, April 19 from noon to 4 pm. If you can’t make it, the next Trail Day is Saturday, April 25.

This is part of a state-wide New York Parks and Trails and Canal Authority project to clean up the winter refuse and present a cared-for public trail along the Chenango Canal Towpath Trail. This five-mile, 10-foot wide trail is open to those who like to walk, watch birds, fish, picnic on the deck or mountain bike.

COVE at Colgate University helps recruit volunteers from campus to work alongside CCA members and friends from the community. Working in units along the trail, volunteers pick up trash, rake around the entrances and drag downed limbs to the roadside for pickup by the NYS Canal Authority.  We need you to bring your families to help because this covers five miles along the summit of this 179 year-old towpath.

Meet us at the Canal Cottage Museum on the corner of Route 20 and Canal Road in Bouckville.  Bring tools such as loppers and rakes and wear gloves and boots and dress in layers for the climate. An old tarp is helpful for loading smaller branches and leaves. Lunch is provided by the CCA with the help of Price Chopper, Kinney Drugs and CCA members Dick and Sheryl Leland.  Pouring rain or wind in the morning could cancel that day’s progress so please call 315-893-7910 to check on our plans.
