MCCPaperLogo--CUTOUT(Oneida, NY – April 2015) Did you know that in the six county central region of New York, Madison County included, that depression is the number one cause of emergency room visits and hospital admissions for individuals receiving Medicaid? According to depression statistics from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) about 9 percent of adult Americans have feelings of hopelessness, despondency, and/or guilt that generate a diagnosis of depression. At any given time, about 3 percent of adults have major depression, also known as major depressive disorder, a long-lasting and severe form of depression. In fact, major depression is the leading cause of disability for Americans between the ages of 15 and 44, according to the CDC.

In this presentation, participants will learn about the elements of depression, signs and symptoms, coping and recovery.

The program will be offered Thursday May 21 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at BRiDGES, 112 Farrier Ave., Suite 314 in Oneida with facilitator Cheryl Giarusso, M.Ed., director of Crisis Intervention Services, CONTACT Community Services in Syracuse.

The cost is $15 or $20 for those wanting OASAS certificate for credentialing.
