(Town of Fenner, NY – Sept. 2015) On Sunday Oct. 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Madison County Historian’s office will be hosting its annual “Archives Day” at Nichols Pond Park in Fenner. Come and experience the history and the beauty of Nichols Pond park, site of a pre-colonial Oneida Indian Nation Village as well as being one of the possible sites commonly referenced where Samuel de Champlain and a band of Huron Native Americans battled the Iroquois nation.
Representatives of the Oneida Nation will be on hand to share what life might have been like at the Oneida village located at the site. Upstate Institute Intern Henry Marshall, from Colgate University, who will present the story of Champlain’s march through central New York.
Special exhibitions featuring artifacts from recent archeological digs, as well as the archeological reports and an early history of how the park came into the counties possession will be on display. Local tour guides will be on hand to give tours of the grounds highlighting a number of prominent features including a burial ground, grain pits, evidence of a stockade wall and the modern day observation deck overlooking the wetlands.
Nichols Pond Park is located at 5797 Nichols Pond Road in the Town of Fenner.
