(New Hartford, NY – Nov. 2015) New York Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney, a small business owner and attorney, announced her candidacy for Congress in New York’s 22nd District. Tenney will be challenging liberal Richard Hanna in the June 2016 GOP Primary.
“Politicians in Washington tell us what we want to hear in the district, but vote the opposite when they go to Washington,” said Tenney. “We need a representative in Congress who has the courage to challenge the power brokers in Washington and the tenacity to fight for our Republican values. I have a proven record of boldly standing up for our Conservative Republican values against the tide of big government liberalism and corrupt cronyist policies. I’m running for Congress because I will continue to stand up and fight for our core principles against the Washington elite.”
“I am running because we need someone with the energy and the backbone to say NO to the Washington elite, defend our Constitution and restore the individual rights and freedoms that have made this country great.” Tenney said.
As an Assemblywoman, Tenney was the first to demand the resignation of the once powerful Speaker Sheldon Silver for taxpayer dollars to cover up a sexual harassment claim. Tenney was also the first legislator to introduce legislation to fully repeal the governor’s gun-grabbing legislation known as the SAFE Act.
“As a single mother who juggled the demands of running a small business while raising my son Trey, I know the challenges that families of the 22nd District face. I’ve run a business during tough economic times. I know how overreaching government regulations and oppressive taxation can make the American Dream seem impossible,” said Tenney.
Tenney was first elected to the New State Assembly in 2010 and is currently serving in her third term. A lifelong resident of New Hartford who has raised her son on the same street on which she grew up, Tenney has continued the commitment to service that her parents, the late Hon. John and Cynthia Tenney started over 50 years ago.
Tenney is a practicing attorney. In 1997, Tenney took over as publisher of the newspaper division of the family business which was started by her grandfather in the 1940’s, during difficult economic times. After successfully turning the newspaper around, it was sold to Gannett in 2004. Tenney and her family remain as co-owners of the Mid-York Press, in Sherburne, also started by her grandfather in 1946, which employs nearly 70 people.
Tenney is the daughter of the late Cynthia and the late Honorable John R. Tenney. Judge Tenney served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of New York in the Fifth Judicial District from 1969 through 2003. Her son Trey graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2013 and is now serving as a 1st Lt. in the Marine Corps.
Tenney graduated from Colgate University and the Taft College of Law at the University of Cincinnati. She is an active member of the community, having served on numerous boards and volunteer organizations throughout the district.
