(Sherburne, NY – Feb. 2016) Be sure to visit Rogers Environmental Education Center on Feb. 20 and learn why winter is “For the Birds!”

Part of the Family Fun series hosted by Friends of Rogers, “For the Birds!” will provide guests an opportunity to explore the wilderness surrounding Rogers Center while discovering unique traits of New York’s feathered friends. The vast number of bird species indigenous to the area makes for an exciting line-up of potential sightings during the hike. Black-capped chickadees, American goldfinches, blue-jays, and northern cardinals are just a few of the birds that participants may spot during the trek.

“The American goldfinch is an especially interesting species, as the male changes color from bright yellow in the summer to a duller gray-green in the winter,” said Environmental Educator Sarah Freedman. “We’re looking forward to spotting some, and learning more about other bird species that make this region their home.”

The program will begin at the Visitor Center on state route 80 in Sherburne. A leisurely hike will be followed with complimentary hot cocoa and an opportunity for guests to create pine cone bird feeders.
