Mike Hulland 3In 1978, when C. Michael (Mike) Hulland walked through the doors of Alternatives Industry at The Arc of Madison Cortland, he expected to stay maybe a year or two. That is what the recent college graduate thought at the time. Thirty-eight years later, Mike will be retiring.  When he started, Alternatives Industry sales were at $100,000 over his tenure the sales grew to $3.5 million. Alternatives Industry provides people with disabilities diversified employment in the field of Industrial/Commercial packaging and assembly services, and manufacturing and/or outsourcing of services.

“I spent my entire adult life here,” said Mike, as he prepares to say goodbye, “What a long strange trip it’s been, but it has been a wonderful one.”

Through Mike’s leadership, he has seen the development of Alternatives Food Products, LOJO Technology, and Alternatives Recycling among other business ventures. The purpose was to provide job training for people with disabilities and sustainability for The Arc of Madison Cortland.

Mike takes great pride with his involvement with the community. He served on the Board of Directors for the Oneida Chamber for six years. He was actively involved with the creation of Alternatives Recycling Center, celebrating 25 years in 2015 and is very appreciative of the Madison County Board of Supervisors for their support.  Mike also chaired the Safety and Health Committee at The Arc of Madison Cortland and was Chair of the CQL Committee for Safe Environments.  Mike is the recipient of the Executive Directors Award from The Arc of Madison Cortland, Les Mitchell DD Award from Madison County Community Services Board, and the 2006 “Business at Its Best” award from the Greater Oneida Chamber of Commerce.

He credits his success to that of his co-workers. “This is my second family here,” Mike said, reflecting on the growth Alternatives has experienced over the last thirty-eight years.  “If I had it to do all over again, I would do it.”

Mike especially wanted to thank Raymond Lewandowski, retired executive director of The Arc of Madison Cortland, and current executive director Jack Campbell for being his mentors and for their support.

“It means a lot to know that you have a boss that believes in you,” Mike said, “Both Ray and Jack gave me the opportunity to grow and develop.”

“I congratulate Mike on his retirement and the 38 years he has committed himself to the mission of The Arc of Madison Cortland.” said Campbell. “I am so happy for mike and today is a celebration of all he has achieved for the families and people we support. It’s also a very sad day for The Arc as we say goodbye to our friend and brother.”

The Arc of Madison Cortland and Alternatives is like a family to Mike.  He met his wife, Janine at The Arc and together they have one daughter, Victoria who will be married in May.

Arc of Madison Cortland and Alternatives Industry wishes C. Michael Hulland the very best on his retirement April 8.
