Elementary- and middle-school students off from school for spring break can have some fun at Oneida Public Library at one or all of four daytime programs, April 26 through April 29.

Starting off on Tuesday, April 26, at 2 p.m., the OPL offers thousands of pieces of Legos for kids with an engineering flair to build structures and mobile units. The Legos come courtesy of the Mid-York Library System.

The spring break movie matinee, on Wednesday, April 27, at 2 p.m., features “Norm of the North,” an animated film released earlier this year and just out on DVD. “Norm of the North” follows the misadventures of the talking polar bear, Norm, and his zany sidekicks,a couple of lemmings, as they take on New York City and Big Business in their quest to save their Arctic habitat. Fresh popcorn will be provided.

On Thursday, April 28, at 2 p.m., older elementary- and middle-school students can test their grasp of kinetic energy in teams competing to build the best (and safest) roller-coaster ride for marbles. They will be using special S.T.E.M. kits that provide all the materials, plus guides to design. Since the OPL has only a limited number of these kits, parents are advised to sign up their children early at the library check-out desk.

For young elementary-school students, author Sandra Reilly will be coming to the OPL on Friday, April 29, at 10:30 a.m. to introduce “the Wish Fairy,” the subject of her new series of short chapter books. A native of Utica, Reilly will also bring the makings of charm bracelets so the children can make and take home their own “make a wish” charms.

Reilly’s “Wish Fairy” books, numbering four so far, focus on a heroine called Hope, a country girl living Upstate and a firm believer in magic, and her adventures with the “not-so-perfect” fairy called Misty.
