Caz library(Cazenovia) The “Open Evening Book Club” will hold its next meeting in the Story Garden Room Wednesday, May 4, at 7 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to contemplate and discuss Yann Martel’s New York Times Bestseller, The High Mountains of Portugal. The Spanish-born Canadian author delivers this new work fifteen years after his Man Booker Prize-winning novel, The Life of Pi.

Around the turn of the century in Lisbon, a young man named Tomás discovers an old journal, which points to the existence of an extraordinary artifact that could redefine history. He embarks on a journey, in one of Europe’s earliest automobiles, in search of this mysterious object.

Thirty-five years later, a Portuguese pathologist and Agatha Christie murder mystery enthusiast becomes entangled in the consequences of Tomás’s quest.

Fifty years later, a Canadian senator seeks solace in his ancestral Portuguese home, following the death of his beloved wife. His traveling companion is none other than a chimpanzee. It is here in this village that the century-old quest for the mysterious artifact comes to an unexpected conclusion.

“The High Mountains of Portugal—part quest, part ghost story, part contemporary fable—offers a haunting exploration of great love and great loss. Filled with tenderness, humor, and endless surprise, it takes the reader on a road trip through Portugal in the last century—and through the human soul” (Amazon.com)

Books are available at the circulation desk.
