Backyard birding is one of the most popular activities in America. According to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, up to 41 million people – 20 percent of the population – are considered “birders.” These nature-lovers maintain feeders and install bird baths for avian guests; some even incorporate nest boxes into their yards for birds to rest in.
“A portion of birders take trips away from home to participate in bird-watching, but backyard bird-watching around one’s home is the most popular form for sure,” said Friends of Rogers naturalist intern Matt Nusstein. With bird-watching increasing in popularity, it is helpful for birders to understand what factors help and hinder the chances of their own property becoming a go-to spot for our feathered friends. With bird-watching increasing in popularity, it is helpful for birders to understand what factors help and hinder the chances of their own property becoming a go-to spot for our feathered friends. Join Friends of Rogers May 3 at 6:30 p.m. for “Creating a Bird Friendly Yard” to learn how to make any outdoor space more inviting for birds.
“During this presentation, we will highlight simple actions that anyone can take in order to make their yard, and even their neighborhood, more bird-friendly,” said Nusstein. “We’ll cover a wide range of different topics from attracting birds, to maintaining their safety. It’s a must for bird-watching enthusiasts, or anyone looking to pick up a new hobby.”
This unique presentation is made possible thanks to the generosity of Evergreene Graphics in Greene.
“We are extremely grateful to Evergreene Graphics for partnering with us,” said Simon Solomon, FOR executive director. “Since 2011, when Friends of Rogers saved Rogers Environmental Education Center from closing, we have relied on the generosity of local businesses like Evergreene Graphics to support community activities, allowing this vital resource to be preserved – and to flourish.”
“Creating a Bird Friendly Yard” will be held in the Visitor Center on state Route 80 in Sherburne; those needing to may use the adjacent parking lot, and the center is accessible. While there is no charge for admittance, a donation is suggested in order to help support future programs at Friends of Rogers.
