This Friday, June 3, the Schweinfurth Art Center will open its summer exhibit featuring artwork by members of the Surface Design Association. The exhibit, Transgressing Traditions: Contemporary Textiles by the Surface Design Association, will include 65 pieces from across the U.S. and around the world, including France, Hungary and Australia.

The exhibit opens Friday at 5 p.m., with the artist reception through 8 p.m., during First Friday. Entry on Friday is free and open to the public. Events that evening include:

5 to 5:30 p.m.: Talk with Juror Dorie Millerson

5:30 to 6 p.m.: Gallery walk about with Dorie Millerson

6:30 to 7 p.m.: Artist meet & greet

7 p.m.: Prizes awarded

Local wine, cheese, appetizers, and desserts will be served.

The goal of the exhibition is to showcase contemporary fiber artists who expand on traditional media and meaning, pushing boundaries and traditions of textile and fiber design. Transgressing Traditions: Contemporary Textiles was juried by Dorie Millerson, Karen Hampton, and the Schweinfurth’s Executive Director, Donna Lamb.

The Schweinfurth Art Center is a multi-art center that offers a range of exhibits, classes and programs for all ages throughout the year. The Art Center is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. The Transgressing Traditions exhibition will be open through Aug. 21.
