GPOGPO Federal Credit Union received the New York Credit Union Association’s prestigious Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award during NYCUA’s 2016 Annual Meeting and Convention, held June 16-19 in Saratoga Springs. The New Hartford-based credit union will now advance to the Credit Union National Association’s national competition.

The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award honors credit unions that strengthen local institutions and materially improve the lives of non-members through community outreach programs other than financial education.

In 2015, GPO FCU staff members took it upon themselves to form a team for the Utica-area Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. In 2015, staff from the credit union approached the Utica office of the American Cancer Society about securing a top-level naming sponsorship for the walk, which had never been done in the Utica-area; only one other community in New York had ever secured a signature sponsor.

Thanks to GPO FCU’s signature sponsorship, the 20th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Utica raised more than $200,000 from 4,000 walkers, including 30 GPO FCU team members, who raised more than $2,400. Leading up to the event, the credit union’s branches hosted fundraiser bake sales, dress-down days and basket raffles, sold pink ribbons, and had a contest among their branches to “go pink” in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
