Curator of Education Molly Jessup discusses Cole Phillips and The Art of the Ad in a gallery talk in the exhibition at 3:00 pm, Sunday, July 31. This talk also marks the end of the exhibition at the Mansion House.
The Art of the Ad: Coles Phillips and Oneida, Ltd. displays the advertising illustrations created under Phillips’ direction and which were instrumental in the emergence of Oneida Community Ltd. as a worldwide supplier of fine tableware.
Phillips was a major force in print advertising during the 1910s, when finely illustrated weeklies and magazine cover art found their way into parlors and offices across the United States. Art of the Ad features more than 30 of the ads Phillips designed for Oneida Community Ltd., including his famous ‘fade-away girl’ promotions. Phillips designed ads for OCL throughout the 1910s and was instrumental in re-branding the company as a major and global purveyor of fine tableware.
The exhibition also features advertising work contemporary to Phillips’ ads, including ads created by Baron de Meyer. Coles Phillips’ unique style distinguished him among advertising designers at the dawn of the Ad Man’s rise to prominence in the 20 th century. Learn more about his work with Oneida, Ltd. and try your hand at creating a display ad for Oneida tableware.
