state-police-seal-150x150Sullivan-based state police charged a Kirkville man with DWI after he stopped at the scene of a car crash early Wednesday morning.

At approximately 11:30 p.m. Aug. 2, troopers responded to investigate a car crash on Fyler Road in the Town of Sullivan. Just after midnight, while interviewing bystanders at the crash scene, Trooper Valerie Sgarlata spoke with Richard J. Brookins, 37, of Fyler Road, Kirkville, and learned that he had been driving westbound on Fyler Road and stopped to check on a car that had struck a utility pole.

While speaking with Brookins, Sgarlata observed a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath. Sobriety tests indicated Brookins was intoxicated, and he was taken into custody for DWI.

Brookins was transported to the SP Sullivan barracks, where a breath test determined his blood-alcohol content to be .16 percent. Brookins was issued traffic tickets for DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 percent or greater and refusal of a breath screen. He is scheduled to appear in Sullivan Town Court Aug. 9, 2016.
