Herkimer College’s Cogar Gallery will showcase over 50 Russian Orthodox icons and religious objects from the collection of the Foundation of Russian History and Jordanville Holy Trinity Monastery from Friday, Aug. 12, to Friday, Sept. 23. A closing reception will be held Friday, Sept. 23, from 5 to 7 p.m.

This exhibit will introduce viewers to the art and history of icon painting, the symbolism of icons and their role in Orthodox worship, and various other styles and methods of producing icons. Examples include: painted with egg tempura, cast in metal, carved from wood and mother-of-pearl, painted on enamel, engraved on silver, embroidered and printed. Additionally, each icon is supplemented with religious objects (vestments, chalices, liturgical gospels and blessing crosses).

The Cogar Gallery, located in the Robert McLaughlin College Center, is open to the public free of charge, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday during the summer when the College is open. For more information, visit www.herkimer.edu/cogar.
